BATTERY HEATING
COKE OVEN PLANT
 Coke oven plant has 2 batteries.
 Each battery consist of 36 ovens.
 Each oven heated by two walls side by side.
 Heating wall
(combustion chamber),where
Coke oven gas and air (1:4) is used

for combustion, temperature raised

around 1200-1300˚c and this heat is
transferred thorough the wall to the
carbonization chamber
(where coal is baked in absence of air).

COMBUSTION CHAMBER
Each heating wall(combustion chamber) consist of
28 burners & pot holes.
14 burners are active at a time, after 30 min. of
time interval it will switch to another 14.

HEATING METHOD
Burner operation:
For every RED reversal in ODD heating wall ODD
no. burner will on
& EVEN heating wall EVEN no. burner will on.
• For every GREEN reversal in ODD heating wall EVEN
no. burner will
on & in EVEN heating wall ODD no. burner will on.
Pot hole operation:
When one burner is in operation the pot hole beside the
burner injecting air, next pair’s pot hole sucking waste gas.
and this waste gas heat absorbed
by regenerator.

and this
waste gas is freed
through chimney(by natural
draught).
Parameters:
Coke oven regime:
• Thermal Regime
• Hydraulic Regime.
• Hydraulic Main Regime.
 Thermal regime:
C.VT.(Control Vertical Temperature)-in 7 & 22 V.cap-1290-
1310˚C
C.W.T.(Cross Wall Temperature)-from 1-28 burners
E.V.T.(End Vertical Temperature)-1 & 28 burner
F.S.T.(Free Space Temperature)-remaining space in oven
C.M.T.(Coke Mass Temperature)-temp. from coke
 Hydraulic regime:
GCM pressure-13-14 mmwc
GCM temp.-approx.80˚C
Ammonia pressure-2-2.4 kg/cm²
Ammonia temp.-75˚C
Ammonia flow-200 m³/hr.
Key Managing Parameters:
Header pipe pressure should not be less
than 60mmwc.
Gas collecting main(G.C.M.) pipe pressure
should not be less than 12-13 mmwc.
Temperature should be maintain with
respect to the production of coke.
 Uniform temperature distribution
throughout the combustion chamber is
maintained.
C.V.T.>E.V.T is about 100˚C.
Problems:
Blower Trip(Electrical fault).
CO gas pipe choking(distribution pipe
choking).
Reversing system problem.
Goose neck pipe choking(by tar).
Problem in waste box operation.
Solution:
By the use of distillation process ,tar &
other carbon particles(benzol,
naptha,zyline,touline etc.) can be removed.
Frequent cleaning of goose neck pipe is
required to remove tar and other carbon
compounds.
Frequent temperature monitoring &
observation through vertical cap is
required.
Conclusion:
Temperature measurement of the Coke Oven Flue provides
vital information on the condition and efficiency of the oven
battery. The life of the oven, the quality and quantity of the
throughput are all related to the balance and temperature
levels in the heating chambers.
Efficient operation of coke ovens is dependent on flue
temperatures and temperature profile. A direct measurement
of oven wall temperatures is most beneficial and can now be
achieved by utilizing specially designed Fibroptic radiation
thermometers, complete with light guides up to108 feet in
length, installed at various positions on the pusher arm.

The thermometers track across the length of both walls of

the oven as it is pushed to produce a complete temperature
profile.
