Livestock sector
 Livestock sector has shown a growth of
4.0 percent
 The growth recorded for the forestry is
6.47 percent
 This growth was mainly due to increase
in production of timber in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa ranging from 26.7 to 36.1
thousand cubic meters.
Available feed resources
In Pakistan, nutritional requirements
of animals are mainly met through
 fodder crops
 Shrubs
 grasses on ranges
 barren lands
 post-harvest fields
 agro-industrial by-products.
 Contribution of nutrients by feed
categories Livestock are getting
58.8, 23.8, 9.2 and 8.2% of their
dry matter form crop residues,
fodders crops, grazing, grains and
agro-industrial by-products,
respectively
Area (lac ha) production (mt) and yield
(t/ha) of fodder crops in Pakistan
Cropping seasons in Pakistan

Pakistan has two cropping seasons

Kharif
 The first sowing season
 Starting from April-June
 Harvested during October-December.
 Rice, sugarcane, cotton, maize and moong
etc
Rabi
 The second sowing season,
 Starting from October-December
 Harvested in April-May.
 barseem, lucern, sugar cane Wheat,
oats, barley and mustard etc
Feed resources categories

Feed resources available in the country

can be divided into two main categories.
Conventional Feed Resources
Non-conventional Feed Resources
Conventional Feed Resources
1) Green roughages:
• It include fodder crops, range grasses
including shrubs and forbs, sugar beet tops,
sugarcane tops, silages and tree leaves.
2) Dry roughages
• It includes hays, straws, stovers and hulls.
Hay is prepared by drying the fodder and
then preserving it.
3) Concentrate feeds
• Concentrates are high in energy and/or
protein, low in fibre, and highly
digestible. They are the expensive part
of the animal feed
• They are used mostly in small quantities
as supplements
Types of concentrates
According to Habib and Siddiqui (1994), two
local types of concentrates are common
Energy-rich
(carbonaceous) including
 Cereal grains
 Wheat bran
 Rice polishing
 Molasses
 Sugar beet pulp
Protein-rich (proteinaceous) sources
from plant origin include
 Oilseed cakes,
 Cottonseed,
 Mustard seed,
 Maize oil,
 Sunflower,
 Toria, sesame,
 Oil seed meals etc.
Non-conventional feed resources

Non-conventional feed refers to those

feeds which are not traditionally used in
animal feeding but have the potential to
be used as feed.
