Definition of discourse

A. Discourse
- Discourse is a meaning that is realized in text.

B. TEXT
- Text is any unit of language or linguistic form that is functional in context

Text as Semantic Unit

A text is a linguistic unit that is functional in content.

d. Sentence

EXPERIENCE
Experience as Reality
Technically the functional of language to
represent experience is termed the experiential
function,as one component of the metafunction
as advocated by Halliday (2004)
• A clause is regarded as one unit of
experience,which constituted by three elements,
they are
1. the process,which is equivalent to activity or
verb in traditional grammar,
2. the participants,which are A persons or things
in the process and
3. the Circumtance,which is environment or
surronding of activity involving the participant
Analysis
Operationally,in order to attain

discourse analysis,the following

experiential functions
The analysis done in section reveals that the
text uses different types of process,participant and
circumstance. The occurrences are included in the
tables by which proportion of each component is
counted and converted into percentage.
Deriving patterns of experience

With reference to the classification of the


elements of experience ,particularly to the
dominant element used in the text as previously
done in the patterns of experience are derived.
Further, with reference to the patterns, the
meaning of the text is derived.the patters of
experience are as the following.
Evaluating the success of the
text
The social context of the text covers the field
,tenor and mode. The field of the text is academic
matter in the sense that the text is about an
argument by academics that man and woman are
different. The tenor involves the writer of
academic text, which may be experts, lecturers and
event students
