• MR STEIN BROUGHT A CALIFORNIA MODERNISM SENSITIVITY TO THE
COUNTRY.
• HIS APPROACH IS CALLED MODERN REGIONALISM. ACCORDING TO HIM
“REGIONAL WITHOUT MODERN IS REACTIONARY, AND MODERN WITHOUT
REGIONAL IS INSENSITIVE, INAPPROPRIATE.”
• HIS SECOND GUIDING FACTOR WAS TO SEEK THE CHARACTER OF THE
SOLUTION IN THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM.
• HE REALISED THE IMPACT DEVELOPMENT WAS HAVING ON THE ECOLOGY
AND HIS DESIGNS SOUGHT TO FIND HARMONY. THE ONLY POSSIBLE
SOLUTION WAS ALONG GANDHIAN LINES- SIMPLE AND ECOLOGICALLY
GENTLE SOLUTIONS.
• MR STEIN’S DESIGNS WERE MODERNISTIC, BUT INSPIRED BY INDIA’S PAST.
• HE WAS GOOD AT WORKING WITH LOCAL MATERIALS, BE IT GRANITE OR
GLAZED TILES, BOTH INFLUENCES OF TUGHLAQ ARCHITECTURE. HE ALSO
USED JALIS IN MOST OF HIS WORKS.
• IN THE WIDER LANDSCAPE OF NATURE, HE USED LOCAL MATERIALS
WHERE HE TRIED TO MERGE HIS BUILDINGS WITH NATURE
• HE TYPICALLY DESIGNED TWO- TO FOUR-STOREY BUILDINGS THAT FUSED
WITH THE SURROUNDING TREES, GARDENS AND POOLS; FLOWERS AND
VINES WOULD SPILL OVER THE WALLS.
• HE WOULD HAVE VERTICAL GARDENS, COURTYARDS COVERED WITH
• INTERRELATIONSHIPS OF SITE WITH
LANDSCAPE, STRUCTURE AND
MATERIALS; SUN AND SHADE.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF
MANAGEMENT, KOZHIKODE
1. The Indian Institute of Management
Kozhikode was set up by the
Government of India in collaboration
with the state Government of Kerala as
the 5th Indian Institute of
Management. It was established in
2001.
2. The campus is located in
Kunnamangalam, 15 km away from
Kozhikode along the national Highway,
NH 212 towards Wayanad. It is about
30 kms from karipur International
Airport.
3. CLIMATE- Tropical humid climate
• ANNUAL RAINFALL- 250 cm to 300 cm
(nearly 70 % of the rainfall is contributed
by the south western monsoon)
• WIND DIRECTION- South West to North
East.

TYPICAL “NAALUKETTU” OF KERALA’S
TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE GIVING A
SENSE OF UNITY
• THE BUILDINGS ARE CONNECTED BY
WALKWAYS WHICH DEFINES THIS
CENTRAL GREEN OASIS.
• THIS CENTRAL AREA HOLDS AN OPEN
AIR THEATRE
• THE REMAINING SURFACE IS
ARTICULATED BY PAVED PORTIONS
THE CIRCLE OF GIVING A SENSE OF SCALE• AND
THEREBY VANTAGE POINT - IT
IS A VIEWPOINT
DIRECTING TO THE VARIOUS BUILDINGS

THAT THE VISITORS SHOULD BE ABLE TO
EXPERIENCE SPECIAL MODE OF NATURE THAT
THE COMPLEX
MAKES A VISITIS
TOPLACED SUCHSO
THE KASHMIR A WAY THAT
MEMORABLE. IT HAS
ENTRY FROM BOTH LAND AND WATER.
WHOLE DESIGN WAS DEVELOPED ON
TWO AXES 90˚ TO EACH OTHER.
• THE FIRST AXIS PASSES FROM
ENTRANCE TOWARDS THE TERRACE
GARDENS AND LAKE, THROUGH THE
ENTRANCE FOYER.
• SECOND AXIS LEADS IN ONE
DIRECTION FROM GUEST ROOMS TO
CONFERENCE FACILITIES AND GUEST
ROOMS.
• THEY ARE SO ARRANGED THAT THEY
HAVE VIEW OF LAKE, MOUNTAIN AND
PALACE.
• THE FIRST AXIS OF THE COMPLEX
DIVIDES THE BUILDING INTO TWO
MAJOR UNITS. TO THE RIGHT OF LAND
SIDE ENTRY IS THE AUDITORIUM,
MEETING ROOMS AND ALL RELATED
AREAS WHERE AS THE LEFT SIDE IS
TOTALLY DEDICATED FOR GUEST
ROOMS.
• GARDEN DESIGNED TOWARDS THE
WATER FRONT SIDE GOES IN LINE
WITH MUGHAL GARDEN IN A
THE COMPLEX IS ORIENTED
IN NORTH-SOUTH
DIRECTION ALONG THE
MAIN AXIS.
RESPONDING TO THE
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS,
THE KCC HAS LARGE
WINDOWS TO ADMIT
MAXIMUM SUNLIGHT.
ROOFS FOR THE GUEST ROOMS
ARE IN TRADITIONAL FORM
WITH SLOPES. THE
CONFERENCE SECTION IS
HAVING
LARGE SPANS AND IS
PROVIDED WITH PARTIAL
SLOPE ROOFS.
LOCAL TRADITIONAL BUILDING TECHNIQUES ARE
ADAPTED TO COMBAT WITH SEVERE CLIMATIC
CONDITIONS.
EXTERIOR: THE EXTERIOR IS A PRECISELY
ARTICULATED CONCRETE FRAME, EXPRESSIVE OF
THE STRUCTURAL SCHEME.
KCC is having exposed concrete structure with precast
concrete blocks & exposed green aggregate panels as
in filling material.
Blue grey slate roof tiles are provided to the sloping
roofs to match the color of surrounding natural
terrain.

MOUNTAINS PROVIDE BACKGROUND. IT
IS PLANNED WITH FOUNTAINS AND
ROSE GARDENS.

STRUCTURES; AN AUDITORIUM
AND CONVENTION CENTER.
• THIS SEPARATION HELPS IN
HANDLING HUMAN TRAFFIC AND
THEY HAVE SEPARATE ENTRIES
AND EXIST .
• BASEMENT FLOOR IS PLANNED
FOR 1000 CAR PARKING.
• CENTER CONSISTS OF THREE ART
GALLERIES NAMED AS VISUAL
ART GALLERY, OPEN PALM COURT
AND EXPERIMENTAL ART
• THE ENTIRE FACADE IS CLADDED WITH
RED BRICKS WHICH GIVE A MAJESTIC
LOOK TO THE STRUCTURE.
• VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL RIBBON
WINDOWS HAVE BEEN USED WITH A
SPECIAL GLASS THAT RESTRICTS THE
ENTRY OF SUNLIGHT.
