Concept of Artificial

Recharge of
Groundwater

Global fresh water resource
Advantages of Groundwater
 Plenty of water is available underground
 Water gets filtered while percolating through sand & stones.
Therefore groundwater remains pure and clean.
 No loss of water through evaporation
 No requirement for expensive and environmentally damaging
dams
 Mostly groundwater is fit for drinking
Causes for Depletion of Ground Water

• Frequent pumping of ground water and it does

not have enough time for replenishment
• Agriculture needs a large amount of groundwater
• Urbanisation and Industrialisation
• Groundwater depletion can also occur naturally
Effects of Groundwater Depletio
• Water demand increases
• Decline in water level will cause us to  pump
water from deeper within the Earth
• Crop failures
• Saltwater intrusion in coastal areas
• Land subsidence in areas where drafts results in
compaction of sediments
Advantages of artificial

recharge
No large storage structures needed to store water. Structures required are
small and cost-effective
 Enhance the dependable yield of wells and hand pumps
 Negligible losses as compared to losses in surface storages
 Improved water quality due to dilution of harmful chemicals/ salts
 No adverse effects like inundation of large surface areas and loss of crops
 No displacement of local population
 Reduction in cost of energy for lifting water especially where rise in
ground water level is substantial
 Utilizes the surplus surface runoff which otherwise drains off
Scientific inputs Required for Planning of
Artificial recharge
 Hydrometeorological Studies
 Hydrological Studies
 Soil Infiltration Studies
 Hydrogeological Studies
 Geophysical Studies
 Chemical Quality of Source Water
