Chapter-3: Fourier Series
Representation of Periodic signals
• Fourier Series Representation of Continuous Time Periodic signals.
• Convergence of Fourier Series (Dirichelet’s conditions)
• Properties of Continuous time Fourier Series.
• Fourier Series and LTI systems.
• Filtering
Fourier Series
•  Is used to represent periodic signals as an infinite series of
weighted sinusoids or complex exponentials (harmonics).
• For signal to be periodic
, where is the fundamental time period.
Periodic signal can be
1) Sinusoidal
2) Complex exponential
Fourier Series….
•Fourier
series is determined by the following formula

(Synthesis eq.)

(Analysis eq.)

Here, are the Fourier coefficients also called the spectral coefficients
and is the fundamental frequency which is related to the fundamental
time period .
Fourier Series….
•  Using synthesis eq. we can reconstruct the periodic signal by summing
up its complex exponential harmonics
• For
1) we get the spectral coefficient which is a constant term, a dc
component and also called the average value of over the period
(i.e., )
2) , we get the first harmonic
3) , we get the second harmonic and so on.
Fourier Series….
•  Analysis eq. is used to calculate the Fourier or spectral coefficients .
The values of determine the contribution or weight of each spectral
component in the construction of periodic signal
• Example 3.2 at page 187 and (demonstrated in the separate video)
helps to understand the above point.
• Examples 3.3 and 3.4 related to the determination of Fourier
coefficients from the given Fourier series expansion are demonstrated
in the separate videos.
