• Engineering geology – branch that deals with the
application of geology for safe, stable and economic design and construction of a civil engg. Project. • Objectives: 1. Enables a civil engg. to understand engineering implications of certain geological conditions in area of construction. 2. Enables geologist to understand nature of geological information essential for safe design and construction of a project. Activities included in scope of geology
1. Geology in construction 2. Geology in water resource development 3. Geology in town and regional palnning 1. Geology in construction
Steps involved are:-
1. Planning Topographical maps – slopes, contours, valleys, gorges etc. Hydrological maps – surface and ground water channels Geological maps – petrological characters and structural disposition of rock types 2. Design - is based on following geological characters Existence and depth of hard bed rocks Mechanical properties of site Presence, nature and distribution pattern of weak structural planes Position of groundwater table Seismic character of the area 3. Construction Selection and proper use of materials for construction Know history before construction in weak zones 2. Geology in water resource development • Exploration and water resource development – utmost necessity • Study of water cycle is essential before execution of any water project • Must have good knowledge on quantitative and qualitative aspects of geological formation (pollution, yield etc..) 3. Geology in town and regional planning • Town planner – must efficiently utilise land to create aesthetically appealing towns that derive maximum benefits – accommodate necessary changes with time • Regional town planner – adopt an integrated approach in all cases to allocate land for all developmental projects. Eg: railway lines, bus stations, mobility hubs etc..
