INTRODUCTION

This project aims at providing comfort and ease while

travelling in addition with smart features that are user
friendly.
The carrier is designed in such a way that it follows a
specific user who is having RF transceiver and in addition
with a feature of avoiding obstacles in the path by raising an
alarm on the user’s smart phone.
There is a facility of tracking the location of the luggage too
so as to avoid theft and losing the luggage.

Problem Statement

The problems encountered have been divided into following

three sections:

Fig.1 The problem with carrying heavy luggage

This project targets all sections of society and all age groups.
Whether they are of old age or young, carrying a heavy luggage
has always been a matter of distress.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 4

Functional Overview
 Motion Detection
• Motion Detection is to be done with the help of PIR motion
detector.
• Should only follow a Single user.
• The user should have an RF transceiver with her/him.
• The Carrier follows the user based on the proximity as per the
signals received from transceivers.

 Speed Control
• Based on the proximity of the user and the carrier.
• The rate at which proximity values change, should determine
the speed of the carrier.
• After a certain limit, the speed becomes constant.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 5

Functional Overview Cont.
 Obstacle Avoiding
• Has to be done with the help of the IR sensors.
• The carrier detects the value of closeness of an object with the
help of IR sensors.
• An alarm would be raised on luggage as well as on user’s
phone & message will be sent on user’s mobile.

 Communication between the Transceivers

• Using SPI communication protocol as it is three times faster
than UART & easy to implement.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 6

Functional Overview Cont.
 Stability of the Carrier
• In order to ensure stability, carrier is designed to move in
lateral position.
• The speed of the carrier and weight management should be in
such a way that there is slight effect of centrifugal force on the
carrier, so as to prevent fall-off.

 Tracking the Location

• The carrier is built with smart features that allow the user to
get the location of the luggage wirelessly on the mobile phone.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 7

Proposed Design
⸎ Sensing the motion of foot movement & accordingly moving the
luggage automatically and also tracking the location of the luggage.
⸎ RF Transceivers are used for wireless communication in between
luggage and legs movement.
⸎ PIR will detect the motion of the legs & signals to be transferred to the
microcontroller.
⸎ Accordingly, the microcontroller will send the commands to the stepper
motor and its speed and direction will be controlled.
⸎ However, on a high level, the following have been considered while
designing the solution:
 Usability and consistent user experience
 Configurability and Flexibility
 Extensibility
 Service oriented architecture

METHODOLOGY

Working

• The luggage will be placed on the carrier, after that when the RF
transceiver in the pocket and in the luggage will establish
connection, the signal will be sent to PIR sensor to start sensing
the foot movement.
• The output of PIR sensor will be sent to microcontroller and it will
send the command to motor driver to drive the motors. In this way
the carrier will move automatically by sensing the foot movement.
• The location of the carrier can be tracked through
GPS/GPRS+GSM module via a message sent on the user’s mobile
and there is a facility of Bluetooth connectivity which will help in
raising alarm in case of any obstacle coming in the way of luggage
carrier when sensed by IR sensors.

Sub System’s Working
• PIR Motion Detector: This module consists of an ultra-nano
power microcontroller to establish wireless communication
between the two RF transceivers, one in the traveller and one
inside the pocket of the person.
• RF Transceiver: Two transceivers are able to establish a low-cost
bidirectional RF link. This module ensures that the luggage will
follow only one person having the RF transceiver inside his/her
pocket.
• TIVA C Microcontroller: This processor is used in cost-
conscious applications requiring significant control processing and
connectivity capabilities. This module will work as the main
controlling device. The output from PIR sensor will be fed to
microcontroller to drive the motors of the luggage as per the
output received.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 11

Sub System’s Working Cont.
• SIM808 GPS Tracker: It is a GPRS/GSM+GPS Quad-band
module, this board uses micro sim card to get the location of the
luggage via notification on the smart phone. It gets the GPS signal
through UART interface and stores the information on the SD
card.
• Bluetooth module: Bluetooth module, HC-05 will be connected
to the microcontroller through serial communication (UART). This
module will help in connectivity between the traveller and the
mobile phone in hand via application software “Bluetooth
Terminal”. This will help in raising alarms on the mobile in case
of any obstacle.
• IR Sensors: These sensors will be placed at the front of the
luggage carrier in order to sense the presence of any obstacle. The
output of sensor will be fed to microcontroller to stop the luggage,
raise buzzer and notify on application developed.

Key Features

 Totally autonomous, free from carrying.

 Obstacle detection, alerts using buzzer & notifies on mobile.

 Real Time luggage tracking facility.

 Dedicated mobile application.

 Avoids theft and losing the luggage.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 13

Applications

 Helpful for people with health issues.

 Army personnel.

 Travelling.

 Industries.

 Shopping.

 Health care units.

 Old age homes.

Department of ECE, ATMECE, Mysuru 14

Conclusion
The proposed system covers most of the issues coming in
way of the present day system of carrying luggage but
still some assumptions are made for real world. This
report provides the structured way of developing the
product, which is till now not provided anywhere.
Medical issues and army personnel problems could be
solved if implemented in future & there is always a scope
for further improvement.
