In the first period of Lawang Sewu, itu

private railway company, NIS. This was
the place where locomotives and trains
produces by NIS were maintenanced.

The reason why this place was built is due

to the dutch’s aim to build railways to
connect Semarang, Surakarta, and
Yogyakarta and due to the territory, which
was quite strategic to monitor dutch army
movements.
Administration Office

In this moment, Lawang sewu, which

used as the headquarters of NIS was
converted to Administration office
due to the increasing number of the
employees from time to time. This
was the reason why Lawang Sewu
was converted as administration
office under NIS.
Japanese Prison

After it was converted to administration

office, during japanese colonization, it was
again converted to a prison

The reason why Lawang sewu was taken over

and used by javanese as a prison by Japanese
is to persecute the enemies of the japanese
colonial (the indonesian independence
soldier) and to make lawang sewu as their
headquarters
The Office of Djawatan Kereta Api
Repoeblik Indonesia (DKARI)

Since the Independence day of Indonesia,

Lawang Sewu was taken over by
Indonesian Army and later it was returned
to DKARI and became the office of DKARI,

The reason of the conversion is to

advance Indonesian railways so that they
continue to grow, as it can be seen
