• Challenges :
Previous work……
• Key approaches to realize the flexibility of a transceiver:
1. Adaptive Size of Modulation Alphabet (Spectral efficiency).
2. Rate-Adaptive Coding (Bit-rate).
3. Four-Dimensional Modulation and Coding (Reach).
Following work ……
• The next generation optical transponders Sliceable Bandwidth Variable
Transponders (S-BVT).

Simulations
• Definitions
• Observations:
Coded system have penalty with respect to
constellation capacity.
For example, PS-QPSK and 6Po1sk-QPSK
formats using bit-interleaving.
SNR is the signal average power average divided by the AWGN power per
symbol

Simulations
Constellation Constrained Capacity Model
• BER as a function of SNR per symbol for an
AWGN same as in previous simulations.
• Observations:
• Significantly improve the sensitivity at low BERs.
• For instance, BER of 5 x 10-5 the PS-QPSK format
shows almost same sensitivity as PDM-BOSK
although it encodes one more bit per symbol.
• Compared to PDM-mQAM format, the
performance degrade with decreasing SNR.

• Observations:
the GN model provides a good
estimate of the reach.
