WHAT IS PROBLEM-
ORIENTED POLICING?
■The police designate a community in which they will engage
in problem solving, develop relationships (that hopefully
become partnerships) with the population, collaborate with
them to diagnose problems that have some generalized
impact, prescribe and implement interventions to solve the
problems, and continuously monitor the results .
■Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) is a method for
improving police effectiveness through examining and
acting on the underlying conditions that give rise to
community problems. Responses emphasize prevention,
go beyond the criminal justice system alone, and engage
with other public agencies, the community and the
private sector, where practical
