Definition:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical
objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software,
sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these
objects to collect and exchange data.
Characteristics of Iot:-
  Intelligence- intelligence in IoT enhances its capabilities which
facilitate the things to respond in an intelligent way to a particular
situation and supports them in carrying out specific tasks
 Connectivity- Connectivity of these objects is pivotal because simple
object level interactions contribute towards collective intelligence in
IoT network.
 Dynamic Nature-The primary activity of Internet of Things is to
collect data from its environment, this is achieved with the dynamic
changes that take place around the devices.
 Sensing- IoT wouldn’t be possible without sensors which will detect
or measure any changes in the environment to generate data that can
report on their status.
 Heterogeneity-. Devices in IoT are based on different hardware
platforms and networks and can interact with other devices or service
platforms through different networks.
Applications of Iot
Smart parking
 Smart Parking is a parking strategy that combines technology and
human innovation in an effort to use as few resources as possible—such
as fuel, time and space—to achieve faster, easier and denser parking of
vehicles for the majority of time they remain idle.
 Parking and transportation are
both essential in the movement of
people and goods. The Smart
Parking and Intelligent
Transportation vision and
overlapping technologies are
steadily melding into one
integrated stream.
Need of Smart parking
People cannot find parking in popular places.
Especially during holidays, traffic is always
bad.
People cannot locate their car in large parking slots

Advantages:-
Shorter waiting time
Saves fuel
Guided to nearest place
Reduce carbon emission

Smart Home
A smart home is a convenient home setup where appliances and devices can be
automatically controlled remotely from any internet-connected place in the world
using a mobile or other networked device.
Its devices are interconnected through the internet, and the user can control
functions such as security access to the home, temperature, lighting, and home
theater.

Smart Irrigation System
Unlike traditional irrigation controllers that operate on a
preset programmed schedule and timers, smart irrigation
controllers monitor weather, soil conditions, evaporation and
plant water use to automatically adjust the watering schedule
to actual conditions of the site.
 Prevents Disease and Weeds
 Conserves Water and Time
 Preserves Soil Structure and
Nutrients
 Gardening Flexibility

Merits of Iot :-
 Data: The more the information, the easier it is to make
the right decision.
 Tracking: The computers keep a track both on the quality
and the viability of things at home.
 Time: The amount of time saved in monitoring and the
number of trips done otherwise would be tremendous.
 Money: This technology could replace humans who are in
charge of monitoring and maintaining supplies.
Demerits-
 Compatibility: As of now, there is no standard for
tagging and monitoring with sensors
 Complexity: There are several opportunities for
failure with complex systems.
 Safety: There is a chance that the software can be
hacked and your personal information misused.
Conclusion -
 Internet of Things offers some pretty interesting
applications in making our lives easier like in Healthcare,
Transportation, and Agriculture. However, various factors
like security, privacy and data storage also need to be
considered .
 It is also worth noting that things have been connected
to networks for ages without the guise of “Internet of
Things”.
