GOOD IELTS COURSE – SCHOLARSHIP FOR HUMANITES

5 Steps to Successful In Reading
[1]
1. Understanding the Keywords/Kata Kunci
2. Paraphrasing [same meaning different words]
3. Skimming/Membaca cepat [General
Understanding]
4. Scanning/Membaca Detail [Detailed
Understanding]
5. Eliminating/Eliminasi [answering the question]

• Step 1: Understanding ”Keywords”
• Read the first question and underline "keywords". These are the
words that you think you will need to search for in the passage. They
are the words that communicate the meaning of the question:
normally nouns, verbs and adjectives.
• Step 2: Paraphrasing
• Paraphrasing is simply re-writing a phrase or sentence so that it has
the same meaning, but with different words. Paraphrasing is one of
the most important skills to learn before doing your IELTS test. It is
most important for writing and speaking, but will also help you in the
reading and listening tests. In other words, if you know how to
paraphrase you are more likely to get the score you need.

• Step 3: Skim the passage first
• Have a quick look at the whole thing to find out what
it’s about and then your mind will start predicting
information: read the heading, then the topic or first
sentence of each paragraph and quickly speed read through
the whole thing. This will help you with ‘global’ IELTS
questions, such as assessing the attitude or the author of the
passage or in choosing the best title or heading for the whole
passage.

Skimming
• Step 4: Scan the
passage which
contains keywords
• means searching for
specific phrases in
the text to answer
some questions.
• Step 5: Eliminating
• Eliminate incorrect answer
• Eliminsai berarti menghilangkan, membuang yang tidak dibutuhkan.
Saat reading, eliminasi berguna untuk membangun fokus pada
pertanyaan dan jawaban yang koheren atau sesuai. Eliminasi
membuang yang tidak penting.

Matching Heading
One type of question that is known for being difficult on the IELTS test
is Heading Match questions in the reading section. It has this reputation
because:
• It takes more time than other questions to complete.
• Often, there are more headings than paragraphs.
• There are some similarities between headings.
• Headings that only include specific details rather than the main idea
mislead candidates.

Strategy #1: Question First -
Reading Second
• 1. First, read each heading.
Try to completely understand the meaning of each heading by reading all of them
thoroughly. Understanding the main idea of the heading can be made easier by
paraphrasing.
2. Circle key words within the headings.
Underline or circle any key words in each heading such as names, places, dates, and
nouns, once you have read them fully. Connecting the correct heading to the
appropriate paragraph may become easier with this step.
3. Any similarities or differences between the headings should be noted.
In this type of question, headings are often very similar or completely opposite.
Similarities and differences will become clearer among the headings, once you have
picked out key words. This will make choosing an option clearer.

• 4. Read the first and last sentence of the paragraph.
•  The first and/or last sentence of a paragraph often contains the main
idea. It is good practice to read these sentences carefully as it will save
time. It is also important to skim the other sentences quickly within the
paragraph because the main idea might not be apparent until the second
or third sentence.
5. The heading that is most suitable for the paragraph should be
chosen.
•  Choose the heading that most closely matches the paragraph once you
have read through them again. Make a note if you are unsure of the
difference between multiple headings, and move on. You may be able to
cross some heading options out and answers may become clearer once
you’ve read all of the paragraphs.

Strategy #2: Reading First -
Question Second
• 1. Read one paragraph at a time.
•  Again, spend more time on the first and last sentences of a paragraph, trying to
identify the main idea.
2. Create your own heading.
•  Come up with your own heading once you have read the paragraph. Your heading
should encompass the main idea, and not just specific details.
3. Read each individual heading.
•  For a complete understanding of the meaning, read the headings thoroughly. This
time, try to choose a heading that is closely related to the heading that you gave
the same paragraph. Again, make note of multiple options that may fit the
paragraph, and move on. As you read more paragraphs, you may be able to
eliminate options.

Contoh Soal:
The Greenhouse Effect
• A.   A greenhouse is a house made entirely of glass: both walls and roof are glass.
One of the main purposes of a greenhouse is to grow tomatoes, flowers and other
plants that might struggle to grow outside. A greenhouse stays warm inside, even
during winter. Sunlight shines in and warms the plants and air inside. But the heat
is trapped by the glass and cannot escape. So during the daylight hours, it gets
warmer and warmer inside a greenhouse, and stays quite warm at night too.
• B.   The Earth experiences a similar thing to a greenhouse. Gases in the
atmosphere such as carbon dioxide do what the roof of a greenhouse does. During
the day, the Sun shines through the atmosphere. Earth’s surface warms up in the
sunlight. At night, Earth’s surface cools, releasing the heat back into the air. But
some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That is
what keeps our Earth a warm and comfortable 59 degrees Fahrenheit, on average.

• C. However, gas molecules, called greenhouse gases, that absorb thermal
infrared radiation, and are in significant enough quantity, can force and alter
the climate system. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases act like
a blanket, absorbing IR radiation and preventing it from escaping into outer
space. The greenhouse effect, combined with increasing levels of greenhouse
gases, produces global warming, which is expected to have profound
implications.
• D. Many scientists agree that the damage to the Earth’s atmosphere and
climate is past the point of no return or that the damage is near the point of
no return. In Josef Werne’s opinion, an associate professor at the department
of geology & planetary science at the University of Pittsburgh told Live
Science, we have three options. Firstly to do nothing and live with the
consequences. Secondly, to adapt to the changing climate (which includes
things like rising sea level and related flooding). Thirdly, mitigate the impact of
climate change by aggressively enacting policies that actually reduce the
concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Matching Heading Options
• i Temperatures on Earth
• ii. The Greenhouse
• iii. Creating Global Warming
• iv. Use of a Greenhouse
• v. Our Choices
• vi. Greenhouse Gases
• vii. Earth’s Atmosphere
• viii. Reversing the Damage
• ix. Effects of Carbon Dioxide

GOOD IELTS COURSE – SCHOLARSHIP FOR HUMANITES

Answer:
• Paragraph A = ii
• Explanation: This first paragraph explains what a greenhouse is and
how it works. The first paragraph does give information about the use
of the greenhouse, such as planting (iv), but that is not the aim of the
paragraph. The information about the use of the greenhouse is
additional information. The paragraph actually explains a) what a
greenhouse is b) what use it has and c) how it works day and night. If
you list that information on paper, the best heading is “The
Greenhouse” – the paragraph gives an overview of a greenhouse.

• Paragraph B = i
• Explanation: The second paragraph explains the changes in the
temperatures on Earth and compared this to a greenhouse.
• Paragraph C = iii
• Explanation: This was a bit tricky. If you didn’t get this right, don’t worry.
The aim of the paragraph is to explain how the global warming is created.
This paragraph explains how the greenhouse gases function to cause
global warming. There certainly is a lot of information about greenhouse
gases (vi), but the reason for the information is to explain how global
warming happens. To help you understand further, if the paragraph aim
was about the gases, it should have more information about the gases
such as what causes them. The information about Carbon Dioxide (ix) is
just additional information.

• Paragraph D = v
• The first sentence opens up the debate of whether it is too late or not
to change the effects of global warming. The paragraph aim is to
present the three options that are open to us according to the
specialist mentioned. Only options three is about reversing the
damage (viii), but that is not the aim of the whole paragraph
