• CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION
• As we know air pollution is big challenge for the world.
• The air pollution due to automobile is 70% of total pollution of air
pollution.
• We have several way for controlling automobile pollution.
• The most effective way is by using catalytic converter in automobile.
• In short catalytic converter are used to convert the harmful gas to harmless
gas.
WHAT IS CATALYTIC CONVERTER?
• It convert harmful gas into harmless gas with the help of catalyst.
• It is pollution reducing unit.
• It placed between the exhaust manifold and the silencer in the vehicle.
CONSTRUCTION
Basic component are:
• Substrate
• Catalyst
• Mat
• Can
• Shields
WORKING
• When the exhaust gas come out of the engine it goes to the catalytic
converter.
• The gas such as NOX , HC and CO are present in exhaust. All these gases
are treated in catalytic converter producing harmless gas like CO2,H2O
and N2 which are safely released in the atmosphere with the help of
catalyst.
• Catalyst is material which promotes chemical change without chemical
reaction.
TYPE OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER

ADVANTAGES
• Reducing amount of CO, HC and NOx, particulate emission.
• It leads to pollution free environment.
• Having long life.
DISADVANTAGES
• Cost is high.
• Volume required is high.
• There is over temperature problem.
• Catalytic material is lost.
APPLICATIONS
• Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines fueled by
either petrol (gasoline) or diesel.
• Including lean-burn engines as well as kerosene heaters and stoves.
• They are also used on electrical generator , forklifts, mining equipment,
truck, busses, locomotives and motorcycles.
• They are also used on some wood stoves to control emissions.
CONCLUSIONS
• The catalytic converter was successfully designed and fabricated.
• The increase in inlet cone length reduces the backpressure and also
reduces the recirculation zones.
• Installation of the catalytic converter reduces the brake thermal efficiency
and increase the brake specific fuel consumption, fuel flow rate.
• At lower temperature the catalytic converter will be inactive. The heat
release due to chemical reaction does not play a significant role.
