CATHOLIC CHURCH
• The Catholic Church is the branch of the Christian Church that accepts the Pope as its leader and is based in
the Vatican in Rome, Founded by Jesus Christ
• A visible society of baptized Christians professing the same faith to Christ
• ‘Catholic’ comes from a combo of two Greek roots “kata” (Concerning) + “Holos” (whole) which means
Universal
• The derivative Greek roots for Catholic comes from the scriptures in acts of the apostles 5:11,15:22, St. Luke
uses the phrase “ holen ten ekklesian” which mean the whole church to refer to communion of Christians
united around the world under peter and the other apostles.
• St. Ignatius was the first to use the ‘Catholic’ as a proper name of the church.
