Objectives and Literatures

Objectives:
 The students have the systematic paradigm about drainage as run-off controlling
in the region.
 The students can understand to procedures of drainage design.
 Enhancing the knowledge about methods used in rainfall and run-of design.
 The students have the knowledge about tidal phenomena (including tidal
analysis using admiralty method) in the estuary, then the influence to drainage
system in estuary.
 The students have skills and knowledge in hydraulics design of drainage
channel.  after mid term of semester.
Literatures:
 Chow, V.T. 1964. Handbook of Applied Hydrology. Mc-Graw Hill: New York.

The Brief of Courses
 1st Week  Introduction and giving assignment grouply.

 2nd Week  Hydrology cycle, principles of drainage design and introduction to

polder system.

 3rd and 4th Week  Design of rainfall based on rainfall data and develop IDF curve.

 5th and 6th Week  Land use and design of run-off.

 7th  Drainage in estuary region, tidal analysis using admiralty method and giving
individual assignment.

 8th  Mid term exam.

The Main Problems

The one of problem in most urban region is flood.

What the meaning of flood ? We can simply state that flood is the run-off that
occurs on the region which we don’t wish to.
So, How can it occurs ?
How to mitigate the floods occurrence ?

Flood can be mitigated through two approach:

 Structural approach: drainage system,

dams, reservoirs, etc.

 Non-Structural approach: green

infrastructures, storm water management.
Types of Drainage
Types of drainage can be distinguished into several conditions:

1. Based on history formed  Natural drainage and artificial drainage.

2. Based on position  Surface drainage and subsurface drainage.

3. Based on function  Single purpose and multi purpose.

4. Based on construction  Open channel and closed-open channel.

The Pattern of Drainage System

First Type

Second Type
Third Type

Fourth Type
Drainage System
Drainage system  needed in developed urban areas because of interaction
between human activity and the natural water cycle.

This interaction rise two types of water that require drainage

First type  wastewater

Second type  stormwater

The interface between public and environment.

In many urban areas, drainage is based

on completely artificial system of
sewers: pipes and structures and most
of them apply the Combined Sewer
Overflows (CSO).
There are two approaches about urban drainage system:

 Combined system (merging wastewater and stormwater into single channel).

 Separated system.
What are
advantages and
disadvantages of
combined and
separated drainage
system ?
