School children have slimmer
appearance than their preschool
years. This is due to the
accumulation and location of the
body or baby fats. Your height
increases at an average of 2
inches and weight gains about
6.5 pounds or more a year.
Children who have a growth hormone
deficiency may be smaller than their
classmates. They may be smaller than
normal at birth, or may start growing at a
normal rate, but slow down after they reach
2 to 3 years. If not treated before puberty
may never reach a normal adult height.
They may be as short as 3- 4 feet tall, but
they are generally proportioned normally
with arms and legs that look the right
length for their bodies. The normal growth
rate has been reduced or what we called
stunted growth, due to malnutrition in early
childhood.
The growth hormones
are responsible to your
height and weight. It
control various growth,
energy, reproduction, and
mood. Produced by special
glands based on chemical
instructions sent out by
the master gland which is
called the pituitary gland.
The pituitary gland, which
is located at the base of
the brain, produces growth
hormone.
Thyroid hormone is
responsible for our
metabolism rate with which
our body runs. Our
metabolism rate plays a
great role in our body. The
thyroid gland that is present
back to the neck is
responsible for the
metabolism rate in our body.
It produces thyroid
hormones that play a key
role in performing many
body functions.
The dysfunction of
thyroid gland affects the
metabolism rate of our
body. The thyroid gland is
responsible for performing
many important activities
in our body. When the
thyroid gland is damaged,
the levels of metabolism
comes down. Dysfunction
of thyroid gland leads to
many health issues like
overweight and obesity.
Overweight and
obesity are increasingly
common conditions in
the Philippines. They
are caused by the
increase in the size and
the amount of fat cells
in the body. Doctors
measure body mass
index (BMI) and waist
circumference to screen
and diagnose
overweight and obesity.
Obesity is a serious medical
condition that can cause
complications such as metabolic
syndrome, high blood pressure,
atherosclerosis, heart disease,
diabetes, high blood cholesterol,
cancers and sleep disorders.
Treatment depends on the cause
and severity of your condition and
whether you have complications.
Treatments include lifestyle
changes, such as heart-healthy
eating and increased physical
activity, and Food and Drug
Administration (FDA)-approved
weight-loss medicines. For some
people, surgery may be a
treatment option.
GROUP ACTIVITY 2
 Use the KWL chart in giving the data. Have the
group a representative to present the table and
answer the questions.
a. How high does a boy or a girl increase in height
per year?
b. How many pounds does a boy and a girl gain in
weight every year?
c. What gland is responsible for the growth
hormones?
d. What will happen if there is a low growth rate?
e. How can we avoid overweight or obesity?
