Food
• They were Hunters and Gatherers.
• Their Diet consisted of mainly Buffalo and
Wild Vegetables.
Shelter
• Tipis were made of long
wooden poles formed
into a cone shape, with
a buffalo hide covering.
• They would have a
“smoke hole” in the
centre to allow smoke
from a fire to escape.
Travel
• Travois were pulled by
horses to transport
goods and supplies.
• Bullboats were
awkwardly shaped, but
watertight.
Nakota Bands

Clothing
• Clothing was made from animal skins, mainly
buffalo hides.
Dakota War of 1862
• One of the traders, Andrew Myrick, told them
that they were “free to grass or their own
dung”. After the attack on the trading post, he
was found dead, with his mouth stuffed full of
grass.
• 303 Dakota men were convicted of the crimes.
Although some were imprisoned, it made the
largest mass execution in US history.

• Fought between 1876 and 1877, beginning with the battle
for powder creek, and ending after the battle of Wolf
Mountain.
