Simultaneous Equation
Objectives:
After the completion of this chapter the students will be able to solve the
words problems related to the simultaneous equations of two variables.
Simultaneous Linear E equation of Two Variables

Two linear equations in two variables taken together

are called simultaneous linear equations. The
solution of system of simultaneous linear
equation is the ordered pair (x, y) which satisfies
both the linear equations.
Rules for solving simultaneous linear equation

• Read the given problem carefully with full concentration as many times as
needed to understand and identify the two unknowns.
•  Suppose the unknown quantities by two variables like x and y with their
proper unit.
•
• Construct two equations with variables x and y from the given
information.
•
• Solve the equations by any one convenient method to find the values of x
and y.

Quadratic Equation

An equation where the highest exponent of the variable (usually

"x") is a square (2).
A Quadratic Equation is usually written ax2 + bx + c = 0

Example: 2x2 + 5x − 3 = 0

2x2 + 5x + 3 = In this one a=2, b=5 and c=3
0
x2 − 3x = 0 This one is a little more tricky: Where is a? Well a=1, as we don't
usually write "1x2"
b = −3
And where is c? Well c=0, so is not shown.

5x − 3 = 0 Oops! This one is not a quadratic equation: it is missing x2

(in other words a=0, which means it can't be quadratic)
Methods of Solving Quadratic Equation

Note:
•A quadratic equation is a polynomial equation of degree 2.
•There are several methods you can use to solve a quadratic equation:
1.       Factoring
2.       Completing the Square
3.       Quadratic Formula
4.       Graphing
•All methods start with setting the equation equal to zero.
•A quadratic equation has two solutions. Either two distinct real
solutions, one double real solution or two imaginary solutions.
