Expanding and Simplifying Algebraic
Level 6 Expressions 04/25/2020

Learning Objectives:

• Able to expand a bracket

• Able to expand two brackets involving

positive integers and simplify

• Able to expand two brackets involving

negative integers and simplify
Expanding Brackets
• To “expand” a bracket means to multiply it out

• To simplify an expression, or to collect like

terms, you add or subtract parts with the
same letter and power
Expanding Brackets
• Expand: 5(a + 7) x a +7
5 5a +35

5(a + 7) = 5a + 35
Expanding Brackets
• Expand: 3(a + 8) + 7(a + 9)
x a +8 x a +9
3 3a +24 +7 +7a +63

3(a + 8) + 7(a + 9) = 3a + 24 + 7a + 63
= 10a + 87
Expanding Brackets
• Expand: 7(b + 7) – 3(b – 6)
x b +7 x b -6
7 7b +49 -3 -3b +18

7(b + 7) – 3(b – 6) = 7b + 49 – 3b + 18
= 4b + 67
Starter
• Expand and simplify the following:

• 8(a – 7)

• 6(b + 3) + 4(5b + 5)

• 9(2c + 6) – 8(c – 5)

• d(d + 7) + 2d(d – 3)

Expanding Brackets
• Expand: y(y + 7) + 2y(4y + 9)
x y +7 x 4y +9
y y2 +7y +2y +8y2 +18y

y(y + 7) + 2y(4y + 9) = y2 + 7y + 8y2 + 18y

= 9y2 + 25y
Expanding Double Brackets
Level 7 04/25/2020

Learning Objectives:

• Able to expand a single bracket

• Able to expand a double bracket

• Able to expand brackets of the form

(a + b)2
Expanding Double Brackets
• Everything in one bracket must multiply
everything in the other bracket

• Use a grid method to expand, then simplify as

normal
Expanding Brackets
• To expand two brackets, we multiply
everything in one bracket by everything in the
other
(n + 4)(n + 7)
x n +7
n n2 +7n
+4
+4n +28

= n2 + 7n + 4n + 28
= n2 + 11n + 28
Expanding Brackets
• Expand and simplify the following:

(a + 9)(a – 4)
Expanding Brackets
• (3m + 7)(2m – 5)
x 3m +7
2m 6m2 +14m
-5
-15m -35

= 6m2 -15m +14m -35

= 6m2 – m – 35
Expanding Brackets
• Expand and simplify the following:

(6t – 8)(2t – 5)
Expanding Brackets
• Expand the following:

1) (a + 8)(a + 7) = a2 + 15a + 56
2) (b + 12)(b + 4) = b2 + 16b + 48
= c2 + 4c – 21
3) (c + 7)(c – 3)
= 2d2 + 7d + 5
4) (2d + 5)(d + 1)
= 12e2 +11e – 121
5) (3e + 11)(4e – 11) = 15f2 - 56f + 49
6) (3f – 7)(5f – 7) = g2 + 16g + 64
7) (g + 8)2 = 9h2 – 66h + 144
8) (3h – 12)2
