Orientation
• Also known as Induction and Onboarding

• Orientation is the systematic and planned


introduction of employees to their jobs,
their co-workers and the organisation.

types of information:
General information about daily work
routine
Review of organization's history
Information about organization’s policies,
work rules and employee benefits

Types of Orientation Programmes

• Strategic choices
– formal or informal
– individual or collective
– serial or disjunctive
– investiture or divestiture

Formal/Informal

• Structured program Vs. Non Structured


program

• Advantage of having a structured program is


that the new employee will acquire a known
set of standards expected by the
organization.

What could be the advantage of having an


informal program?

Individual/Collective

• Individual program preserves individual


differences and perspectives.

• Collective programs advantage is that it


helps the new hires share anxieties and
make friends with each other.

Serial/Disjunctive

• Serial Orientation is when an experienced


employee inducts the new hire, acting as
a mentor and tutor.

• Orientation becomes disjunctive when a


guide is not available for the new hire.

• Investiture seeks to ratify the usefulness


of the characteristics brought in by the
new employee.

• Divestiture seeks to modify the


characteristics brought in by the new hire.

Evaluation of Orientation Program

Evaluation methods include


•Questionnaires
•Group discussions
•Follow-up interviews

Ideally evaluation should be done after a


time period, once the employee has settled
into his job.

Problems of Orientation

• Supervisor who is entrusted with the job is not trained


or is too busy.
• Employee is overwhelmed with too much information
in a short time.
• Employee is overloaded with forms to complete.

• Employee is asked to perform tasks where there are


high chances of failure that could needlessly
discourage the employee.

•Employee is thrown into action too soon.

•Employee’s mistakes can damage the company.

•Employee may develop wrong perceptions


because of short periods spent on each job.

Placement

Placement refers to the allocation of people


to their jobs.

It includes initial assignment of new


employees, and promotion, transfer, or
demotion of present employees.
