Introduction
 Computer graphics can be used in many disciplines.
 Effective tool for presenting information.
 Computer Aided manufacturing.
 Charting, Presentations, Drawing, Painting and Design, Image Processing and Scientific
Visualization are some among them.
Graphics
 Graphics are visual presentation on surface, such as a computer screen.
 Examples: photographs, drawings, graphic design, maps and other images.
History
 The phrase “Computer Graphics” was coined in 1960 by William Fetter, a graphic designer
for Boeing.
 The field of computer graphics developed with the emergence of computer graphics
hardware.
What is Computer Graphics?
 Creation, Manipulation of geometric information using computer techniques.
 Art of drawing pictures, lines, charts, etc. Using computer with the help of programming.
 Display those images on screens or hardcopy devices
 Image processing
 Others: GUI, Haptics,
 (Display VR….)
Types of Computer Graphics
 Non Interactive Computer Graphics
 Interactive Computer Graphics
Interactive Computer Graphics
 Interactive Computer Graphics involves a two way communication between computer and
user.
 This helps him to signal his request to the computer.
 The computer on receiving signals from the input device can modify the displayed picture
appropriately.
 For example, it helps to train the pilots of our airplanes. we can create a flight simulator
which may help the pilots to get trained not in a real aircraft but on the grounds at the
control of the flight simulator
Non Interactive Computer
Graphics
 In this, the user does not have any kind of control over the graphics image.
 Familiar examples of this type of computer graphics include the titles
shown on TV and other forms of computer art.
 Screen saver.
Application
 Paint programs
 Presentation Graphics
 Computer Art
 Entertainment
 Education & Training
 Computer Aided Design (CAD)
 Desktop publishing
 Image processing
Paint programs
 The images are stored as bit maps and can easily be edited.
 It is a graphics program that enables you to draw pictures on the display
screen which is represented as bit maps.
 In contrast, draw programs use vector graphics, which scale better.
Presentation Graphics
 Used to produce illustration for reports or generate slides for use with projectors.
 Commonly used to summarize financial, statistical, mathematical, scientific, economic data
for research reports, managerial reports & customer information bulletins.
 Examples: Bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, surface graphs, time chart.
Examples of
presentation graphics
Computer Art
 Include artist’s paintbrush programs, paint packages, CAD packages and
animation packages.
 These packages provides facilities for designing object shapes & specifying
object motions.
 Example: Cartoon drawing, paintings, product advertisement, logo design.
Entertainment
 It can be defined as a simulation of movement created by displaying a
series of pictures, or frames.
 A cartoon on television is one example of animation.
Education & Training
 Computer generated models of physical, financial and economic systems
are used as educational aids.
 Models of physical systems, phycological systems, population trends, or
equipment such as color-coded diagram help trains understand the
operation of system
 simulators for practice sessions or training of ship captains
 aircraft pilots
Computer Aided
design(CAD)
 It is the acronym for computer-aided design.
 Used in design of buildings, automobiles, aircraft, watercraft, spacecraft,
computers, textiles & many other products.
 A CAD system is a combination of hardware and software that enables
engineers and architects to design everything from furniture to airplanes.
 Software packages provide multi-window-environment.
Desktop publishing
 Provides a full set of word-processing features as well as fine control over
placement of text and graphics, so that you can create newsletters,
advertisements, books, and other types of documents.
 It means by using a personal computer or workstation high-quality
printed documents can be produced.
Image processing
 Image processing deals with cleaning up nosily and blurred images &
creating clear picture.
 Image processing is a method to perform some operations on an image, in
order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful information
from it.
 It is a type of signal processing in which input is an image and output may
be image or characteristics/features associated with that image
Uses
 Entertainment and Advertising
 Scientific Visualization
 Industrial Design
ADVANTAGES
 It’s have ability to show moving pictures and thus it is possible to produce
animations with computer graphics.
 The computer graphics also provides facility called update dynamics.
 It’s had ability to show moving pictures and thus it is possible to produce
animations with computer graphics.
 It provides tools for producing pictures not only of concrete real-world objects
but also of abstract, synthetic objects such as mathematical surface in 4D and of
data that have no inherent geometry such as survey results.
DISADVANTAGES
 When it is not properly built, it can be very difficult to work with.
 It generally requires more memory resources than a non-graphical one.
 It might require the installation of additional software, e.g., the "runtime
environment" in the case of java.
Graphics packages
 A set of libraries that provide programmatically access to some kind of graphics 2D
functions.
 Types
o GKS-Graphics Kernel System-first graphics packages-accepted by ISO & ANSI
o PHIGS (programmers Hierarchical Interactive Graphics Standers)-accepted by ISO & ANSI
o PHIGS + (Expanded package)
o IGES
The best software for
graphic design
 Adobe illustrator cc
 Adobe photoshop
 Adobe InDesign
 Canva
 Pixlr
 Inkscape
 Autodesk sketchbook
Conclusion
 Computer graphics is the discipline of generating images with aid of computers.
 However as computer graphics went out of fashion when audiences became used to them.
 we see graphic designers using computers as they should be intended as another tool to get
the required creative effect.
