the management of
scoliosis

Ankit Gurjar
What is
Scoliosis....?
• When you look at a normal spine from
behind, it looks straight.but for scoliosis
patient it is a complex three-
dimensional deformity, on an X-ray,
viewed from the rear, the spine of these
patients can resemble an "S" or a “C ”
Some people with scoliosis look like
they’re leaning to one side.
• A person’s spine can curve to the right,
left, or on both sides.
What is
Scoliosis....?.....cont.

• to diagnose scoliosis, a person’s spine

must be curved by 10 degrees or more.
• most people won’t notice anything
unusual if your or your child’s spine
only curves by 10 degrees.
• Scoliosis is usually only noticeable if the
spine curves more than 20 degrees. In
these cases, other people may notice a
shirt that hangs unevenly or a body that
looks like it’s tilting over.
causes....?

• An estimated 65% of scoliosis cases

are idiopathic, about 15%
are congenital and about 10% are
secondary to a neuromuscular
disease.
• At least one gene, CHD7, has been
associated with the idiopathic form
of scoliosis.
• Scoliosis risk factors include age (9-
to 15-year-olds), female sex, and
family history.
• Congenital scoliosis can be attributed to
a malformation of the spine during weeks
three to six in utero. It is a result of either
a failure of formation, a failure of
segmentation, or a combination of
stimuli.
• medical conditions affecting the nerves or
Type…. muscles could affect the spine.
• neuromuscular scoliosis are due to spina
bifida or cerebral palsy and can result in
complete paralysis.
• degenerative scoliosis are due to previous
surgery, or osteoporosis can cause the
spine to change shape.
symptoms....?
Diagnosis...?

• The orthopedic specialist

may ask you to do a back
bend test – you bend
forward from your waist.
• imaging tests...
• X-rays - while you’re
standing.
• An MRI scan - particularly
if you’ve had muscle
weakness or changes in
sensation.
Treatment..?
• Treatment of scoliosis is based on the
severity of the curve and the chances
of the curve getting worse.

• Physical therapy
• Chiropractic
• Occupational therapy
• Casting(EDF)
• Bracing
• Surgery
