WHAT IS A
MODAL VERB?
The modal verbs are those words that work as auxilia
verbs to give different intentions to the comunication

USES OF MODAL VERBS
We use the modal verbs to express:

Ability
Suggestions / Advices
Possibility / certainty
Obligation
Necessity
Permission
Requests
Offers
THE MODAL VERBS ARE:
 CAN
 COULD
 SHOULD / OUGHT TO
 MUST
 HAVE TO
 MAY / MIGHT
 MUST
 SHALL
 WOULD
 Can: ability, opportunity (in the
present), asking and giving permission
(informal), polite requests, offers (to do
something). THE
 Could: ability , opportunity in the MODAL
past, asking permission (formal),
possibility (small possibility), polite
VERBS
requests (asking for things) USES
 May: asking permission (no speaking-
very formal), possibility (present-future),
suggestions.
Must: Certainly, necessity, rules,
order, wish.
THE
Should /Ought to: advices, asking MODAL
advices, ing/ form, to give a personal

Shall (I / We): suggestions, offers.

 Might: Possibility (present / future),
less possibility that an action MODAL
happens.

it represents something possible but i negative way.

 Mustn’t  Bad ideas, rules, prohibitons.

 Couldn’t  Something possible.

 Needn’t  Something is not necessary,
