BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 1

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 2
 The global growth model is clearly on an unsustainable

pathway.

 An exponentially expanding population, extravagant

consumption patterns, rising greenhouse gases

triggering catastrophic climate changes, dwindling

biodiversity reserves, rapid and unregulated urbanization

are just some of the environmentally alarming trends

delivered by the existing model for economic growth

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 3

 Thus, it is no surprise that while the global GDP has

more than doubled in the past three decades the planet

has paid a very heavy price with more than 60% of its

natural ecosystems being degraded.

 It was these concerns that gave birth to the idea of a

global green economy.

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 4

 The aim was to revisit, revise, rethink and improve the

clearly unsustainable growth model and come up with a

viable solution.

 Within this context, over the past few years, many

countries have been trying to firstly define what “green”

actually means and secondly endeavour to implement

and translate it into practical action on the ground.

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 5

 In this context, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

took upon it the challenge of not only clearly defining but

also politically conceptualizing the notion of a green

economy in Pakistan.

 To paint economy Green, the Government of KPK has

launched “The Billion Tree Tsunami” project.

EFFECTS ON ENVIRONMENT

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 20

 The project has achieved its restoration target through a

combination of protected natural regeneration (60%) and

planned afforestation (40%)

CONCLUSION

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 25

 Pakistan is seventh on the list of the countries mostly

likely to be affected by global warming and has one of

the highest deforestation rates in Asia

 Decades of tree felling have reduced the country’s

Con
clus
ion forests to less than 3 percent of its land area. About 40

percent of the remaining forests are in KPK

BILLION TREE AFFORESTATION 26

 Reforestation drive by KPK govt will decrease the effects

of global warming and natural disasters like floods that

cause devastation in KPK and elsewhere in Pakistan

every year
