HISTORY OF VIRTUAL ORGANISATION
In 1990’s a new concept came in existence known as
Virtual organization, though it arouse around 1990’s it
has been practiced for last 4 decades. In Western
Australia around 1960’s there have been many features
of virtual organization being implemented in housing
construction organization
The Open University in the United Kingdom was the
world’s first successful distance teaching university. It
was founded in the 1960s on the belief that
communications technology could bring high quality
degree-level learning to people who had not had the
opportunity to attend campus universities (located in
Milton Keynes)
TYPES OF VIRTUAL ORGANISATIONS
ONLINE VO : E Bay, Amazon
COLLABORATIVE VO : These groups of
organizations need not be working together
permanently; they would be established
dynamically and would be vanished
dynamically. Eg construction company and
suppliers
HYBRID VO : Both online and Collaborative
CHARACTERISTICS
Exist for specific purpose
Membership and structure of a VO evolve over time
Switching: VO members can switch from one project to
another.
Dynamic VOs have a capability to unite quickly.

leadership, shared access to computing resources and
services and shared loyalty
Spatial dispersion: VOs can be formed across country
borders throughout the world.
BENEFITS OF VIRTUAL ORGANISATIONS
VOs make it possible to satisfy constantly
changing customer and market requirements in
a competitive manner
It becomes possible to provide services
precisely tailored to a specific customer need
An ability to participate in VOs increases the
total service range a company can offer to its
customers
Participation in VOs increases the total number
of end-customers a company can reach
indirectly via its partners.

In order to have a successful business, organizations
look into cutting costs and better performance and
which can be achieved by virtual organization. Virtual
organization provides organizations to share
resources which they lack in their firm. Virtual
organizations would be used to eliminate the
traditional practices in business and making it virtual
in order to make the organization more effective and
flexible. with the use of information technology and
communication technology which would lead to
outcomes like V-teams, V-universities, V- co-
operations, V-products and V- communities
