Region I

ILOCOS REGION
HISTORY
The Spanish arrived in the 16th century and established
Christians missions and governmental institutions to
control the native population and convert them to
Catholicism
Before the formation of the cordillera Administrative
region, Region I also included the provinces of Abra,
Mountain province, and Benguet. Before Region 1 was
modified by Ferdinand Marcos, Pangasinan was not
part of the region.
Geographical Profile
Region I is located in the northwest of Luzon. In Its
Eastern borders are regions of Cordillera
Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley and in the
South Central Luzon. To the West north is the West
Philippines Sea.

ILOCOS NORTE
Provincial Capital: Laoag
Geographical Location: 487 kms northwest of Manila.
Bounded in the East by /cagayan and Aklinga Apayao, in
the Southeast by Abra, In the South by Ilocos Sur and in
the west by the South China Sea.

Cities and towns: Adams, Bacarra, Badoc, Bangui, Batac,


Burgos, Carasi, Currimao, Dingras, Dumaleng, Espiritu,
Laoag city, Marcos, Nueva Era, Pagudpud, Paoay,
Pasuquin, Paddig, Pinili, San Nicolas, Sarrat, Solsona,
Vintar.
ILOCOS SUR
Provincial capital: Vigan City
Geographical location: Located along the western
coast of Northern Luzon. Bound by Ilocos Norte on
the north, Abra on the northeast, Mt. province on the
southeast, La Union on the south, and China Sea on
the west.

Provincial Capital: San Fernando City
Geographical Location: bounded on the north by
Ilocos Sur, on the South by Pangasinan, on th east by
Benguent, and on the west by the China Sea.

Geographical Location: Boundaries are Lingayen Gulf,
La Union and Benguet on the north, Nueva Vizcaya on
the northeast, Nueva Ecija on the east, Tarlac on the
south and Zambales and China Sea on the west.

DIALECTS
Majority of the population speaks Ilocano, the third
largest spoken language in the Philippines, although a
significant number also speak Pangasinense.
Tagalog and English are the medium of instruction in
schools. Ilocano is widely used by the majority people
while pangasinense is spoken in the central towns of
Pangasinan.
