OVERVIEW

• Prototyping is a process of building

a model or a draft version of an idea.
• This is a stage where preliminary
changes and fixes are done.
• Designs generally go through several
prototyping processes before they
are released for actual production.
HELPING AIDS
The two software served as the aids in the prototyping process:
1. Catia
2. Autodesk fusion 360
3. Cura
A 3D printer also aided us along the process.
METHODS OF PROTOTYPING
• SUBTRACTING
Traditional tooling manufacturing process is a technique in which
material is removed from a solid piece of material until the desired design
is obtained.
• ADDITIVE
Additive type is the opposite of subtractive type instead of removing
material, material is added layer upon layer to build up the desired design.
TYPES OF PROTOTYPE
• Paper prototype
(sketch/model)
• Clay prototype (clay
sand)
• Casting
• Carpentry
• Machining
PROTOTYPE TECHNIQUES
• Stereo lithography (SL)
Material used: photopolymer materials in 3d printing begins as liquid resin
which are cured and hardened with ultraviolet.
• Laminated object manufacturing(LDM)
Material used: plastic nylons , metal powders
• Selective layer sintering (SLS)
Material used: metals in powdered state/sheet state , stainless steel , INCONEL,
titanium
• Fused deposition modelling (FDM)
Material used: polycarbonate(PC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS),
acrylonitrile styrene acrylate.
CATIA SOFTWARE
• CATIA software is a multi-platform
software suite for computer-aided
design, computer-aided
manufacturing, computer-aided
engineering.
•  CATIA enables the creation of 3D
parts, from 2D sketches, sheet
metal, composites, molded, forged or
tooling parts up to the definition of
mechanical assemblies.
CURA SOFTWARE
• Cura is an open source 3D printer slicing
application.
• Ultimaker Cura works by slicing the user’s
model file into layers and generating a
printer-specific g-code. Once finished, the
g-code can be sent to the printer for the
manufacture of the physical object.
• It can work with files in the most common
3D formats such as STL, OBJ, X3D, 3MF as
well as image file formats such
as BMP, GIF, JPG, and PNG.
3D PRINTING

ADVANTAGE APPLICATION
S: S:
• Faster production
• Mass customization
• Easily accessible • Rapid manufacturing
• Better quality • Food
• Cost-efficient • Gift industries
• Risk reduction
PROCESS
Preparation of CAD model using CATIA software:
2nd STEP

• Conversion of CAD model to STL file:

• The STL format is:
1. STL : “Standard triangulated Language”
2. Through this software the developed CAD model is converted into
the form of millions of small triangles.
3. This later helps in storing and conversion of data.
FINAL STEP
FINAL PROCESS includes:
• Cleaning
• Removing support material
• Polishing
• Painting
• Aesthetic beatification
Finally we send the prototype from the CURA
software to the 3D printer for printing
