Interesting facts about Hermitage museum
1. The palace was constructed for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the
Great. Sadly, the empress died before the palace was completed.
2. In 1837 a fire destroyed most of the rooms of the Winter Palace and ruined
the exterior. The fire started due to the construction mistakes in the Small
Throne room. It was later re-built.
3. The Red Army in Germany looted paintings and hid them in the State
Hermitage building in the year 1945. They were first exhibited as ‘Hidden
Treasures Revealed’.
4. It is believed that if spend a minute looking at each painting or other
masterpieces on display in the Hermitage, you would require 11 years to see
them all.
Why is the Hermitage famous?
• Before the Hermitage became one of the world's best
museums, it was the personal collection of Empress
Catherine the Great. Only in 1852 did the growing art
collection open to the public.
• The huge museum consists of over 3 million items, of which
only about five percent are exhibited in 350 halls.
• The Hermitage is full of ghosts, such as that of Peter the
Great and the last Romanov family. Some are quite unusual
for Russia. For example, it’s said that during a full moon a
blood pool appears at the knees of the sitting statue of the
ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet.
