WHAT IS RAPID PROTOTYPING ? A prototype is a scale model of an actual product. It is often used as part of the product design process to allow engineers and designers the ability to explore design alternatives, test theories and confirm performance prior to starting production of a new product. Rapid prototyping is a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data.

The first rapid prototyping method, called stereo lithography, was developed in the late 1980s, but more sophisticated techniques are available today. It is an additive manufacturing process in which the part is fabricated by deposition of layers contoured in a (x-y) plane two dimensionally.
GENERALIZED STEPS FOR RP 1. Create a CAD model of the design. 2. Convert the CAD model to .STL (Standard Tessellation Language) format. 3. Slice the STL file into thin cross-sectional layers (0.05 - 0.1 mm). 4. Construct the model one layer atop another. 5. Clean and finish the model.

ADVANTAGES OF RP Reduced design & development time Reduced overall product development cost Separate material can be used for component and support No need to design jigs and fixtures No need of mould or other tools Post processing include only finishing and cleaning Harder materials can be easily used Minimum material wastage Improved and increased user involvement
COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURING
DISADVANTAGES OF RP Lack of accuracy Added initial costs Some rapid prototyping processes are still expensive and not economical Material properties like surface finish and strength cannot be matched Many times component get distorted The range of materials that can be used is limited
COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURING
APPLICATIONS OF RP Patterns for sand casting, investment casting and injection moulding On-demand manufacturing Manufacturing of very complex shapes Manufacturing of parts in aerospace, marine and automotive industries 3D visualization for education and training Sculpture in architecture field Customized surgical implants in medical field Fashion and Jewellery
