ENERGY RESOURCES

RA 9513 – Renewable Act of 2008

Governs the development, utilization and
commercialization of energy resources in
the Philippines
Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is the energy which is generated

from natural sources i.e. sun, wind, rain, tides and can
be generated again and again as and when required.
They are available in plenty and by far most the
cleanest sources of energy available on this planet. For
eg: energy that we receive from the sun can be used
to generate electricity. Similarly, energy from wind,
geothermal, biomass from plants, tides can be used to
fulfill our daily energy demands.
ENERGY RESOURCES ( RENEWABLE )

ENERGY RESOURCE KIND OF ENERGY USED

Hydroenergy Kinetic energy of falling water
Ocean power Kinetic energy of flowing
( Tidal ) water
Temperature difference
Ocean power between surface water
( OTEC ) (25°C)and deep ocean
water(5°C)

Geothermal Underground heat

Solar power Radiant energy

Wind power Kinetic energy

ENERGY RESOURCES ( NONRENEWABLE )
Coal – a sedimentary rock made up of solid
organic materials
CLASSIFICATIONS OF COAL
WATER CARBON HEAT VALUE
TYPE COLOR (%) (%) ( kJ/kg )
Peat Brown 75 15 7000 – 11 600
Lignite Dark brown 45 35 16 300
Bituminous
(Soft Coal ) Black 5 – 15 55 – 75 28 000
Anthracite
( Hard coal ) Black 4 95 32 600
Non-Renewable Energy

Non-Renewable energy is the energy

which is taken from the sources that are
available on the earth in limited quantity
and will vanish fifty-sixty years from now.
They are called non-renewable because
they cannot be re-generated within a
short span of time. Non-renewable
sources exist in the form of fossil fuels,
natural gas, oil and coal.
-
ENERGY RESOURCES : COAL
 Philippines is one of the world’s minor
producer
 Coal deposits in the Philippines
o Semirara Island in Antique – largest
o Coal mines – Cebu, Zamboanga
Sibugay, Albay, Srigao and Negros
Province
ENERGY RESOURCES : COAL
 Philippines coal – fired power plants
provides 40 % of the country’s electricity
requirement
 Largest producers are found in
o Sual, Pangasinan Tokyo Electric )
o Masinloc ,Zambales ( AES Corp )
o Pagbilao, Quezon ( Tokyo Electric )
o Limay, Bataan ( SMC Consolidated )
o Maribeles, Bataan ( GN Power – AC Energy )
ENERGY GENERATION : COAL
Energy generation : Coal
ENERGY RESOURCES : NATURAL GAS
 A mixture of naturally – occurring light
hydrocarbons composed mostly of
methane
 The cleanest of all fossil fuels
 Comes from the remains of ancient
organisms, under high heat and pressure
undergoes chemical transformation that
creates methane ; trapped in rock
formations
ENERGY RESOURCES : NATURAL GAS
 Largest natural gas reserve – Malampaya,
Palawan
 Ilijan Power Plant in Batangas City – the
largest power plant that uses natural gas
from the Camago – Malampaya Gas field in
Palawan
ENERGY GENERATION : NATURAL GAS
ENERGY RESOURCES : PETROLEUM
 Comes from the remains of tiny diatoms that
died and buried under conditions of mild
temperature and pressure
Formation of oil reservoir requires :
o A source rock rich in organic material
buried to an appropriate depth
o Porous and permeable reservoir rock to
accumulate oil
o Cap rock ( seal ) to prevent oil from
escaping to the surface
ENERGY RESOURCES : PETROLEUM
 Philippines oil deposits
o Mindanao :
o Agusan – Davao Basin
o Cotabato Basin
o areas straddling Sulu and Tawi - tawi
