REGION 13:

CARAGA

CARAGA
Caraga is an administrative region of the
Philippines, on the northeastern portion of the island of
Mindanao, designated as Region XIII. The Caraga
Region was created through Republic Act No. 7901 on
February 23, 1995.

The region is composed of five provinces:


• Agusan del Norte
• Agusan del Sur
• Surigao del Norte
• Surigao del Sur
• Dinagat Islands

with Butuan City being the regional administrative


center.

The etymology of CARAGA came from the native word


“kalag” which means “spirit of soul”, and from then on

Catague When the paper folded years later, Anoy went to
Davao to work with Kaliwat Theater Collective, a
community based cultural institution engaged with
tribal communities, farmers, fisher folk in partnership
with the religious and academe.

He handled video/print documentation, production


and set design.

The Day After


A founding member of the Guevarra and
Dominic Blumentritt Group of artists, Dominic Rubio was
born in Paete, Laguna, the Lakeshore town
famous for its woodcarving tradition. He studied
Rubio at the University of Santo Tomas College of Fine
Arts where he majored in commercial arts. He first
worked briefly as artist in one of the largest multi-
national advertising agencies in the country, Puris
Lintas of Manila. Later, he lived and worked in
Pearl Farm, an upscale resort located Davao del
Rubio
Sur. first exhibited his works at the Ad
Infinitum, delving on the subject of women,
mother and child, the ethnic Filipina as depicted
in her day-to-day chores amid the surrounding
landscape. A major show in 2003 at Galerie
Joaquin explored his favorite subject of Filipino
women in the context of an evolving sensibility
as shown in the figures and faces from an earlier
period at the turn of the century as well as a
suite of updated portraits replete with glamour

Golden
Dagger
Handle
A dagger from the Surigao Treasure. The
swirling lines and the asymmetric form
suggest raging flames surrounding a bird’s
head with a disk at the tip of its long beak. In
Indonesia, the garuda or sun-bird was the
god Vishnu’s vehicle. In old Philippine
languages, the sun was also called hari, or
king. The symbolism here, then, is that the
Butuan kings were vehicles of the divine.
The Golden Tara of
Agusan
The Agusan Gold Image also known as The Golden
Tara was found in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur.
According to the history, The Golden Tara was found
by a Manobo woman named Bilay Campos on July
1917 at the river bank of Wawa river of the said
town. The word Tara was a Sanskrit name which is a
Goddess from the religion Valjryana Buddhism.

It stands about 7 inches tall while, weighing 4

Lolong the
Crocodile
The Agusan marsh wildlife
sanctuary is a protected area in the
Philippines declared by the former
President Fidel V. Ramos. The
marshland acts like a sponge, as it
is nestled in the midwaters of the
Agusan River drainage basin
The Agusan sactuary in Agusan
del sur was home to the record-
breaking crocodile “Lolong”.
Golden Sash
The owner of the golden sash is the owner of
a sovereign of such high status. It is worn by
a powerful chieftain.
Tinuy-an Falls
Is a waterfall in Bislig city,
Surigao del Sur. It is the main
tourist attraction in Bislig, a city
known as the Booming City by
the Bay.

The Tinuy-an Falls is known as


the “Niagrä Falls” of the
Philippines.
Magellan
Marker It was erected in the time of Spanish District
Governor Jose Maria Carvallo in 1872, this edifce is
located at the mouth of Agusan river in the present
day. Magallanes, is the site of the first catholic mass
in Mindanao in April 8, 1521. Magallanes, in the
olden days was called Baug, formerly the site of
Butuan
Butuan
City
The word “Butuan” was believed to
have originated from the sour and
locally available fruit “butuan”.
However, it also considered that the
name came from a local chieftain
“Dante butuan” who once governed
the areas for some time.
Festival
s
Bonok – Bonok a colorful festival displaying the
Surigaonon's Tribal Culture through
road moving. It is multi day-long
Festival celebration denoting the Surigao
City's yearly party festivity which is
celebrated each September 9. Held
out of appreciation for the city's
benefactor, San Nicolas de Tolentino,
this prominent Mardi Gras festivity
highlights road parties and
customary ethnic move ceremonies.
The day-long celebrations occur in
the region around the Provincial
Sports Complex which is an
extraordinary place to see the a wide
range of artists perform.

It features the dances of the


Mamanwa and Manobo ethnic tribes
Kahimunan
Festival The “Kahimunan” Festival is an
annual celebration of the Señor
Sto Niño and a traditional ritual
performed by the natives before
the start of the planting season,
characterized by chanting,
singing and playing accompanied
by indigenous musical
instruments such as the gimbor
(drum), gong and bamboo
instruments called “Kalatong”
and “Kotik.”
Naligayan
Festival unlike the usual Catholic-themed
Filipino fiesta, does not celebrate a
patron saint nor revolve around a
parish church. It is a commemoration
of the founding anniversary of Agusan
del Sur, and it pays tribute to
everything indigenous and local
about the province and its culture.
Coincidentally starting on June 12
which is the Philippine Independence
Day, and culminating on the founding
day, June 17
