Here and there in Russian

Remember the following words:


здесь [zdyes’] – here
тут [tut] – here / right here
там [tam] – there

1.When you want to say that something is here or there, use the following
formulas.

Такси́ уже́ здесь - The taxi is already here


Эта сумка тут – the bag is here
Та книга там – that book is there
Pointing at things :
2. When pointing at things, you can use the words вот and вон.
These words don’t have a direct translation in English. Вот is used for something
around you, and вон points at something further.

Вот мой дом - Here is my house


Вон твоя́ маши́на - There is your car (Your car is over there)

3. You can use вот and вон when you see the object at which you are pointing.
If you only want to point a direction (for example, because the object is not visible
at the moment of speaking or you are pointing at an area), use вот тут / вот здесь
(something nearby) or вон там (something far away).

Вот тут мы обе́даем - Here we have lunch


Вот здесь я рабо́таю - I work here
Апте́ка вон там - The pharmacy is over there
4. You can also use вот тут / вот здесь to point back at what has been said

Вот здесь я c ва́ми не согла́сна - Here I do not agree with you

5. Sometimes you can hear Russians saying вот там


Здесь всё про́сто, а вот там уже́ всё сложне́е - Here everything is simple, but
there it is more complicated

Giving things to people


Вот ва́ши ключи́ - Here are your keys
Вот ва́ша сда́ча- Here is your change
Вот, держи - Here you are (informal)
Вот, держите - Here you are (formal or plural)
There is and there are

When talking about existence of something somewhere (there is/are), use the verb
“to be” in the Present tense – есть.

Здесь есть стол - There is a table here


Там есть дере́вья - here are trees there
