What Are Conjunctions?
 Join two or more words phrases or sentences
Types of Conjunctions

Coordinating, Subordinating and Correlative

Coordinating Conjunctions
 For
 And
 Nor
 But
 Or
 Yet
 So
 FANBOYS connect words group of words or sentences
that are of equal rank or importance
 Coordinating conjunctions can be used to connect two
independent clauses of two dependent clauses
 But not an independent clause and dependent clause.
Where Are They Used?
 To add one statement to another
 George is a good singer and he plays the guitar.

 When there are two statements expressing opposition or contrast


 It was cold but we did not wear our jackets.
  
 To add statements expressing a choice between two alternatives
 You can have the soup or you can wait for the final course.
  
 For statements expressing and inference
 She will give the meeting for she has worked hard for it.
  
 IMPORTANT : When a coordinating conjunction join two independent
clauses we usually put a comma before the conjunction
Subordinating Conjunctions
 Conjunctions that join dependent or subordinate clauses to
independent clauses
 Although
 As
 After
 Before
 Because
 If
 Since
 That
 Though
 Till
 Until
 Where
 While
Where Are They Used?
 Because / Since/ As – Used to show reason
 Although/ Even though – Used in the
beginning of the subordinating clause.
 When/ Before/ After/ As soon as/ Since/ By the
time are used to show time.
 Where/ Wherever are used to refer to a
position or place.
 So that to show purpose
 Unless/ Until – negative conditional
Correlative Conjunctions
 Always used in pairs
 Neither – nor
 Either – or
 Not Only – But Also
 No Sooner – than
