People can still file their returns without the linking. However, the IT
department will not process such returns until the linking has been made.

Let us now take a look at the process of linking your PAN and Aadhaar cards.
ONLINE LINKING OF AADHAR AND PAN

The online linking of the PAN and Aadhaar took centre

stage in the 2019 Union Budget, wherein Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman suggested allowing the Aadhaar for
tax return filing in India. However, the finance minister
suggested that since over 120 crore Indians already have
an Aadhaar card, they must look into utilising it for tax
payment processes. Since then, people have taken a more
active interest in trying to link their Aadhar and PAN card.
Now, let us take a look at how to do the linking.
WAYS TO LINK PAN CARD AND AADHAR
People can complete the online linking of their
Aadhaar number and PAN in two ways. Both may be
done by visiting the official Income Tax e-filing
website. The two ways by which the linking can be
done are as follows:
1. Without logging in which takes 2 steps
2. By logging in which takes 6 steps
TWO STEP PROCEDURE WITHOUT LOGGING IN
Step 1: Go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
Step 2: From the home page, go to the left panel and click on
Link Aadhaar
Step 3: Enter your PAN number, Aadhar number and name on
the Aadhar
.

Step 4: Once you are done double-checking, click on Submit

Step 5: The UIDAI will verify the linking and then confirm it

Note: In case there is any small mismatch with regards to your

name in the Aadhar card, you will have to use an Aadhaar OTP.
Ensure that your date of birth and gender are the same in both
the PAN and Aadhaar. In case your name in both are
completely different, the linking will fail during the verification
process, and you will have to make the necessary corrections
in either of the two ID proofs.
SIX STEP PROCEDURE BY LOGGING IN
Step 1: Register yourself as a taxpayer in the official Income
Tax Website, in case you are not already a registered user
Step 2: Log in to the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal
by using your login credentials
.

Step 3: After logging in, a pop up window will come up asking

you to link your Aadhar and PAN.
Step 4: In case you don’t see such a window, go to Profile
Settings tab and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
.

Step 5: Your details will appear on the screen. Verify them with the
ones on your Aadhaar card.
