Introduction
IIS Virtual Lab provides help to the students who are unable to attend lab classes due to
some medical issues or some other assignments.
This Virtual Laboratory provided by IIS (deemed -to- be) University offers experiments done
in department of Physics and other disciplines through which new students can get
acquainted to the way experiments are done.
Through this project new students can get acquainted to the way experiments are done in the
Physics department of IISU, by making remote experimentation possible.
In the Virtual Labs project, web-enabled experiments have been designed for remote operation
and viewing.
The Aim of this Project is to arouse the curiosity of the students and permit them to learn at their
own pace and also assess themselves and interact with faculty and other students.
The project aims to cover topics like- faraday’s law , junction diode, maxwell’s needle etc.
Objectives of Project
The Pilot Phase of the Virtual Labs project started in April 2009 sponsored by the Ministry of
Human Resource Development (MHRD), where approximately twenty labs were developed as
proof of concept. The participating institutes in this project are: IIT’s, Amrita University and
Dayalbagh University. IIT Delhi is coordinating this project under the National Mission on
Education through Information and Communications Technology (NMEICT). There have been
earlier attempts at providing remote access to labs and the first paper reporting the use of remote
labs in an undergraduate courses, applied to control engineering laboratories, appeared in 1996.
Several authors also reported remote labs, as an aid to teaching. However, most of these labs
were developed as stand-alone initiatives. Several collaborative initiatives have been also
taken by the teaching fraternity for developing online labs, such as iLabCentral (2013),
LiLa (2013), Labshare (2013), Go-labs 2013, ISES (2013) , National Co laboratories (2013)
etc.
The REXNET (2005) project is an example in which human resources and the available
equipments are shared between different teaching institutions. However, Virtual Labs
project is a paradigm shift in the area of ICT-based education. For the first time, such an
initiative has been taken up in India in the area of remote-experimentation on such a large scale.
It covers all important areas of engineering and sciences. Over one hundred labs comprising of
more than a thousand experiments have been developed.
Methodology
Scope:
The project consists of developing a website exclusively for the IIS University. For this reason
its major users will be restricted to IISU.
The only way to access this website will be through Login Id. It will serve new as well as
existing students and faculty members, and also occasional visitors of the university.
It will be specially designed for the students of The IIS University who are pursuing BSc in
Physics.

Steps for Launching the Website
As of now the website is on standalone computers (localhost) but once it will be formally launched , the url will
provided to users and users can click on the url and visit the website.
Admin will be provided id and password and they put additional information. Component of quiz also has
special
admin rights where the admin put more question and enlarge the size of the quiz. Qr code will be provided for
the
website & the url will also shared in text with visitor.
. We will host the website using GoDaddy which is publicly traded Internet domain registrar and web hosting
company which provide domains for the web hosting. Steps for hosting the website are :
Register a Domain Name
Go to GoDaddy.com
Choose Website Hosting Plan
Choose a Domain Name
Register into GoDaddy
Summary of work done
As the research work came to end the following works were done a fully functional website was
developed which was covering various experiments from physics like Bending of beam, Maximum power
transfer, Newton’s ring and many more. Each experiment consists of aim, apparatus required, Observation,
theory, procedure and viva questions, Animation was developed for each of practical. Quiz was provided.
Apart from experiment the website also provide chatbox to users where they can chat with other visitors,
students or teachers. Also it has a feedback form where the student can put the feedback so that
enhancement and features are to be considered for future work.
Conclusion & Future Work
The learning procedure through real laboratories puts student’s life in jeopardy.
Some experiments cannot be performed due to time constrains or hazards.
The cost in order to construct or to preserve a real laboratory is forbidden.
There are experiments that can be simulated only in computers.
Virtual Reality provides a friendly representation of the provided information, interaction with the
system, which does not require advanced knowledge of the computers technology and reduced cost
compared to other technologies. In addition, one of the most important aspects of this proposal is the fact
that the development of Virtual Laboratories can be fully supported by the existing Computer
Laboratories, without the need of additional investments and infrastructure.
Thus the website will be really useful for the Physics students of IIS deemed-to-be University. This
website will be beneficial to students as they can learn the experiments through animation and can
create circuits on their own through simulation. They can clear their doubts through discussion forum and
provide feedback as well. In future, more experiments of physics can also be added to the website by the
faculty members who will be admin of this website. Moreover, we can add experiments of other subjects
as well such as Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics and so on. In this way IIS deemed-to-be University
will be able to develop its own Virtual Lab.
