Transport

Across the
Membrane
Cellophane as an
Alternative
Semipermeable
Membrane in the
Mechanism of Dialysis

2
Hypothesis
• According to Cruz et. al (2019) dialysis refers
to the separation of molecules on the basis of
size and by their ability to diffuse through a
semipermeable membrane.

• A semipermeable membrane is a thin layer of

filtering material which separates substances
when a driving force is applied across the
membrane..

3
Hypothesis
• Cellophane is an accidental discovery by Swiss
chemist Jacques E. Brandenberger in 1900.
Inspired by seeing a wine spill on a restaurant’s
tablecloth, he decided to create a cloth that could
repel liquids rather than absorb them. He tried a
waterproof coating formulated from cellulose. The
coated fabric was too stiff, but the clear film
easily separated from the fabric; the film later
became known as cellophane.

4
The experimenters believe that
cellophane is not an effective
alternative semipermeable
membrane in the process of
dialysis.

Experimentation

Materials
◍ 1 sq.foot cellophane
◍ Filter paper
◍ Evaporated milk
◍ String
◍ 500 mL beaker
◍ Distilled water
◍ 25% trichloroacetic solution

Conclusion

Only smaller molecules can pass through the

membrane. From the result of this experiment, we have
failed to conduct the right procedure because of some
possible errors that occurred during the actual
experiment. The material used is one of the main error of
the experiment, The cellophane, not all cellophane is
permeable which doesn’t allow all kinds of substances to
pass readily through the cellophane that caused the
distilled water to pass through successfully.
