Specialist Topics (in QM/PM)

2019
Conference Poster Presentations
Choice of Specialist Topic
• In the first half of the module we have looked
at the range and scope of current research
topics in QM/PM.
• You have hopefully seen at least one topic that
has captured your interest.
• In the second half of the module, you should
concentrate on that topic.
Choice of Topic
• Any topic to do with ‘Specialist Topics in
QM/PM’ as discussed in seminars, ‘fantasy’
conferences etc.
• Choose a topic that interests you…
• … but also interests some other people.
• Try to find at least one recent reference (2016,
2017,2018).
Next few weeks…
• Work on and prepare for poster presentation
• You should discuss your thoughts and ideas
with a member of staff (MC, EV, MBS, AR, JG,
AT…)
• Submit a title and a couple of lines in a couple
of weeks’ time for JG to check your topic is ok.
Independent Study
• You have to decide:
– what to study, where, when, how..
• This may be a new experience for you.
• Don’t panic – this is an important learning
experience.
• Your dissertation will be a lot more of the
same.
Our Conference
• The format of all conferences is slightly
different.
• Ours will consist of
– a conference handbook
– a session of poster presentations
– (and hopefully, a guest lecture).
Content
• The content of your poster presentation
should include:
– Introduction/overview of topic
– Some current research/developments
– Something interesting/useful for the audience
Conference Handbook
• There will be a conference handbook on
Moodle.
• You should submit your material for the
Conference handbook a week beforehand.
• This should include:
• an abstract (100 – 150 words)
• a short biography including contact details
• a few references and suggestions for further reading.
• Formatting instructions on Moodle
Posters
• There are useful links on the assignment sheet
about poster design and layout.
• The UWS printing department prints A2
laminated colour posters for £1.22. (I will see
if the School will pay!)
• Posters will be collected after display – but will
be returned to you later.
Distance Learning/London
• Although some of you wont be able to attend
the conference in person, we will try to make
it as accessible for everyone. (Moodle, Webex
etc.)
• Let me know if you have any particular issues
or suggestions.
Review
• Even though you are ‘presenting’ at the
conference, you are also attending as
delegates.
• You should look at the handbook and some of
your fellow delegates’ posters.
• You should write and submit a brief review of
the whole conference.
Dates & Deadlines
• Confirm title/topic with JG
• Submit material for conference handbook
• Produce posters
• QM & PM Poster Presentations
• Conference reviews
Dissertation
• Those of you about to complete your taught
modules (successfully) should now be about
to start your dissertation.
• You can use the remainder of this module, and
Research Methods to start.
• You should therefore be discussing both your
topic/literature and proposed research
methodology with a member of staff.
