$2 Trillion Stimulus

What is a stimulus package?

★ A stimulus package is a coordinated effort to increase government

spending and lower taxes and interest rates in order to stimulate an
economy out of a recession or depression.
★ Based on principles outlined by Keynesian economics, the goal is to
increase aggregate demand through increased employment, consumer
spending, and investment.
★ The U.S. Senate voted to approve a $2 trillion stimulus bill on March 26,
2020 to back stop the economy from the economic impact of the
coronavirus

How big is $2 trillion dollars really?

We all know that a million, a billion, and a trillion have different values.

A billion is 1,000 times larger than a million.

And a trillion is 1,000 times larger than a billion.

But what does that look like if we were to plot them all on a number line?
Stimulus in millions of dollars

Here are some items in the stimulus package that are measured in millions of
dollars:

★ $450M for emergency food assistance

★ $324M for the state department to provide emergency evacuations

★ $88M for the Peace Corps

Converting into time units: Millions

One million seconds is about 11 days and 14 hours.

(I’m going to round that to 11.5 days to make calculations simpler)

So if instead of dollars we measured the aid in seconds, they would equate to:

Emergency food assistance: 450M seconds → 14.2 years

State department: 324M seconds → 10.2 years

Peace Corps: 88M seconds → 2.7 years

Stimulus in billions of dollars

Here are some items in the stimulus package that are measured in billions of
dollars:

$500B for American businesses

★ $25B for passenger air carriers
★ $4B for cargo air carriers
★ $17B for national security
★ $454B for other businesses, states, and municipalities

$117B for healthcare industry

★ $100B for public health and social emergency fund
★ $65B for hospitals
Converting into time units: Billions

One million seconds is about 11.5 days, then one billions seconds would be
11,500 days, or about 31.5 years.

So if instead of dollars we measured the aid in seconds, they would equate to:

American businesses 500B seconds → 15,750 years

★ Passenger air carriers 25B seconds → 787.5 years
★ Cargo air carriers 4B seconds → 126 years
★ National security 17B seconds → 535.5 years
★ Other businesses 454B seconds → 14,301 years
Health care 117B seconds → 3,865 years
★ Public health 100B seconds → 3,150 years
★ Hospitals 65B seconds → 2,048 years
Converting into time units: Trillions

One billion seconds is about 31.5 years, then one trillion seconds would be
about 31,500 years.

So how big is this stimulus package if we measure all $2,000,000,000,000 in

seconds instead of dollars?

2 trillion seconds→ 63,000 years!!!
