She is also an influential book critic, Oscar-
nominated actress, and editor of her own
magazine.

She was born to a single mother

in rural Mississippi poverty and
later raised in a city in the interior
of the country, Milwaukee. She
described herself as a victim of
sexual abuse and rape in
adolescence, becoming pregnant
at fourteen, the baby was born,
and within days she died of
illness.
