TECHNOLOGY TO

SUPPORT MATH
Low tech and high tech tools to try for Special Education students
Low tech tool: Euclid’s Elements
• Book: Euclid, the Father of Geometry
• This book can be used to help students to understand where
all the geometry concepts came from, learning from the
father of geometry himself, Euclid Alexander.
• All elements of Geometry are proven in Euclid’s 13 books.
• Having the students explore how Euclid did will help them to
further understand and comprehend all geometry math core
standards.

Low tech tool: Geometry
Drawing tools
• Using compass, ruler, protractor and set squares
• This gives student hands on experience with
drawing and creating their own shapes
Low tech tool:
Geometric Shapes
• Models are always helpful!
• These give hands-on students help and can help
them better understand the make up of different
shapes.
• These tools will help more with lower functioning
8th graders who might need extra assistance in
figuring out the difference between shapes in
geometric terms.
• Example:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.G.A.4
Represent three-dimensional figures
using nets made up of rectangles
and triangles, and use the nets to
find the surface area of these
figures. Apply these techniques in
the context of solving real-world and
mathematical problems.
Low tech tool: white
board with grid
• Drawing what each item is can be helpful for student to
learn geometry terms.
• Grid lines on the white board can help the students to
illustrate successfully using white board markers.
• Hands-on working with hands.
• Can be used for any of the Core Standards for any grade-
level
• VERSITILE!
Medium Tech: Khan
Academy
• Learning modules, quizzes, and videos
available online.
• All students can start where they are at
and can also be given Khan Academy as
homework if the students have internet
access at home.
• All the videos and learning modules refer
back to Core Standards which makes
teacher’s jobs easier.
High tech tool:
Geometry Pad app
• Taken from 10 tech tools to teach math in the
classroom, by Jake Potter
• Graphing device that replicates paper that can be
used online
• Great tool for students to explore geometry skills
on their devices or on iPads or on PC’s or Mac’s
