INTRODUCTION
 SBI is the country’s largest commercial bank.
 The Indian government maintains a stake of

nearly 60 percent in SBI through the central


Bank.
 SBI have the world's largest branch network,

with more than 13,500 branch offices


throughout India.
 SBI is staffed by nearly 220,000 employees.
 SBI is also present worldwide, with seven
international subsidiaries
 SBI have also entered into Bancassurance(Life

Insurance), assets management, and


securities brokering sectors.

International presence
 SBI have seven international subsidiaries.
 The bank has 92 branches, agencies or

offices in 32 countries.
 In Nigeria SBI operates as Indo-Nigerian

Merchant Bank, since 1981.


 In Canada SBI operates as State Bank of India

(Canada).
 In Nepal, SBI owns 50% of Nepal SBI Bank,

which has branches throughout the country .


 In Indonesia it owns 76% of PT Bank.
 It has branches of the parent in Colombo,

Dhaka, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Johannesburg,


London and environs, Los Angeles, Maldives,
Muscat, New York, Osaka, Sydney, and Tokyo.
 It has offshore banking units in the Bahamas,

Bahrain, and Singapore, and representative


offices in Bhutan and Cape Town.
History
 The State Bank of India was created in 1806,
in Calcutta as the Bank of Calcutta.
 It was also the country's first joint stock

company.
 The Bank of Bombay was created in 1840,

and was soon joined by the Bank of Madras in


1843. Together with the Bank of Bengal, they
became known as the "presidency" banks.
 In 1921, all three presidency banks were

merged to form, imperial bank of india.


 By the middle of the 1950s, the Imperial Bank
operated more than 170 branch offices, as well
as 200 sub-offices.
 The lack of a banking infrastructure in rural
regions led the government to develop a state-
owned banking entity to fill the gap. As part of
that process, the Imperial Bank was
nationalized and then integrated with other
existing government-owned banking
components. The result was the creation of the
State Bank of India, or SBI, in 1955.
Business and Financial Metrics
 SBI'sincome has risen continuously at an
average 29.44% over 2002-08.
 Net Profit for FY 08 stood at Rs 67.29 billion,

up by 48.2% from Rs 45.41 billion in FY 07.


 The bank's current and savings account

(CASA) ratio has remained stable at 43% even


in the volatile times of 2007-08.
 From 2003-08 SBI's NII has grown at an

average 9.6%, indicating improvement in


operational efficiency.
 Over 2003-08 SBI's Net Profit has more than
doubled from Rs 31.05 billion to Rs 67.29 bn.
