3.

4 PROCESS OF
ABSORPTION AND
TRANSPORTATION
OF DIGESTED FOOD
AND DEFECATION
LEARNING STANDARD

At the end of the lesson students should be able

to:
• 3.4.2 Relate the function of digestive system
blood circulatory system and respiratory system
• 3.4.3 Elaborate and communicate about
defecation.
SUCCESS CRITERIA
Pupil will be successful if they:
• Watch and understand the 2 videos attached
• State at least 3 characteristics of small
intestine that are suitable for food absorption.
• State the 3 end products of digestion.
VIDEOS

•Please watch the videos

given.
•Understand the videos.
 Small intestine (Digestion is ended here)
 The food in this part of the intestine is mixed with the intestinal
juice (alkaline) which is secreted by the intestinal gland &
contains enzymes
amylase

Complex sugar glucose (simple sugar)

Erepsin

Peptones / polypeptides (protease) amino acid

Lipase

Fats fatty acid +glycerol

The digestion is completed in small intestine

CLASS OF FOOD END PRODUCTS

CARBOHYDRATES GLUCOSE
PROTEINS AMINO ACID
FATS FATTY ACID+GLYCEROL
 The absorption of food takes place in
the small intestine.
The inner wall of the small intestine is
covered with tiny finger-like projections
called villi (singular: villus).
Villi increase the surface area for
absorbing food.
The digested food which exist in small
molecules (glucose, amino acids, fatty
acids and glycerol), minerals and
vitamins are able to absorb through the
walls of the villi into the blood.
(One cell thick)

Lacteal
The small intestine is very long
(6m) and has many folds covered
with millions of villi.
This increase the surface area and
allow more opportunities for
absorption.
The wall of the intestine is very thin
and moist to enable food molecules
to dissolve easily and enter the
blood capillaries.
The peristalsis movement of the
intestine further enhances the
absorption of digested food.
THE EFFICIENCY OF ABSORPTION OF
FOOD CAN BE INCREASED BY HAVING

a. more villi to increase the surface

area
b . villi with very thin wall
c. a dense network of blood
capillaries
CLASS ABSORBE PURPOSE
OF FOOD D BY:
Glucose Blood Glucose-for cell
& vessels respiration to release
amino in villi energy
acid Amino acid-for the
process of assimilation &
to build new cells and
repair damaged cells
Fatty Vessels fatty acid and glycerol
acids, called form body fats and other
Glycerol lacteals substances.
& in villi.
vitamin
Reabsorption of water and
defecation.
Water and minerals is reabsorbed by
the large intestine
Undigested food in the large intestine is
expelled as faeces
The faeces is kept in rectum and
thrown out through anus.
The process of removing faeces is
known as defecation.
