5
CONTROL QUALITY - TESTING AND PRODUCT
EVALUATION

Testing is an organized and constructed

investigation conducted to provide objective
information about the quality of the product or
service under test in accordance with the project
requirements. The intent of testing is to find errors,
defects, bugs, or other nonconformance problems
in the product or service.
Early testing helps identify nonconformance
problems and helps reduce the cost of fixing the
nonconforming components.
PM BOK 8.3.2.4

CONTROL QUALITY - TESTING AND PRODUCT
EVALUATION

Testing CLAUSE 21 – ENGINE INSTALLATION AND TRIALS

21.1 The seller is responsible for the engine installation and conduct of
successful trials at Buyer’s premises.

CLAUSE 22 – ACCEPTANCE TRIALS

22.1 The engines acceptance will include the following:
22.1.1 FATs by 04 Buyer personnel at OEM’s premises.
22.1.2 Harbour acceptance Trials (HATs) at KS&EW
22.1.3 SATs (including high Speed trials)
22.1.4 14 Days endurance Trials.

MONITOR STAKEHOLDERS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS

REEMA KHAN

8
MONITOR STAKEHOLDERS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication techniques that can be used for

this process include following:

Feedback is used to ensure that the information to

stakeholders is received and understood.
Feedback provides interactive communication
between the project manager, team and all other
project stakeholders.

Examples include coaching, mentoring, and

negotiating.

9
MONITOR STAKEHOLDERS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS

For Example:

The major procurement in KS&EW project is to

procure MTU engine by Rolls-Royce Power
Systems AG Germany .
At this stage, communication between both
parties are very important so, Project manager
provides his feedback on the basis of engine
trials to engine manufacturer through emails.

10
MONITOR STAKEHOLDERS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Presentations provide clear information to

stakeholders. A presentation is the formal delivery
of project information to relevant stakeholders. It
can include but are not limited to:

• Progress reports and information updates to

stakeholders

• Background information to support decision

making

11
MONITOR STAKEHOLDERS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS

• General information about the project and its

objectives, for the purposes of raising the profile
of the work of the project and the team

• Specific information aimed at increasing

understanding and support of the work and
objectives of the project.

For Example. In Pakistan Navy, formal

presentations during Project Management
Reviews (PMR) meetings is an example of
Project Presentation.
12
CONTROL PROCUREMENT – PERFORMANCE REVIEW

SAAD SOHAIL

13
CONTROL PROCUREMENT – PERFORMANCE REVIEW

Performance Reviews for contracts measure,

compare, and analyze quality, resource, schedule,
and cost performance against the agreement.

This includes:

identifying work packages that are ahead or

behind schedule, over or under budget, or have
resource or quality in the product or service.

PM BOK 12.3.2.3

14
CONTROL PROCUREMENT – PERFORMANCE REVIEW

CLAUSE 7.4.1– PAYMENT TERMS AND MILESTONES

In our project contractual payments were linked with completion of
specific milestones (except 20% down payment to be paid at signing of
contract), therefore based on the performance reviews against specific
milestone, schedule of payment was made as under:

7.4.1.1 Contract signing 20% 1 April 19

7.4.1.2 FATs 30% 1 Oct 19
7.4.1.3 Delivery 10% 1 Dec 19
7.4.1.4 Installation 20% 1 March 20

7.4.1.5 Sea Trials 10% 1 Dec 20

:
7.4.1.6 Warranty 10% 1 Dec 23

CONTROL PROCUREMENT - EARNED VALUE ANALYSIS

16
CONTROL PROCUREMENT - EARNED VALUE ANALYSIS

Earned Value Analysis (EVA) is an industry

standard method of measuring a project's progress
at any given point in time, forecasting its
completion date and final cost, and analyzing
variances in the schedule and budget as the
project proceeds.
Oftentimes the term “earned value” is defined as
the “budgeted cost of worked performed” or
BCWP.

17
CONTROL PROCUREMENT - EARNED VALUE ANALYSIS

1. OUR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT WAS DIVIDED INTO VARIOUS PHASES.

2. WE CAN CONDUCT EARN VALUE ANALYSIS DURING OR AT THE END
OF ANY PHASE.
3. FOR EXAMPLE COMPLETION TIME FOR FIRST PHASE I.E.
PROCUREMENT OF CONSTRUCTIONAL RELATED MATERIAL (I.E STEEL
PLATES) , WE HAVE 30 DAYS TIME AVAILABLE AND BUDGET
AVAILABLE IS RS.5.0 MILLION

4. DETAILED CALCULATIONS FOR EVA IS ON NEXT SLIDE

18
CONTROL PROCUREMENT - EARNED VALUE ANALYSIS

Total No. of days 30 days

Budget at completion Rs =5,000,000
% Actual Complete 50%
EV=% Actual Complete x BAC
PV=% Planned Complete x BAC
SPI=EV/PV
We calculate after 15 days
EV = 0.5x500,000 2,500,000
PV=0.5x500,000 2,500,000
SPI = 1

Since SPI = 1 its means we are on Schedule

CONTROL RESOURCES – ALTERNATIVE ANALYSIS

TARIQ AZIZ

20
CONTROL RESOURCES – ALTERNATIVE ANALYSIS

• The process of ensuring that the physical

resources assigned & allocated to project are
available as planned, as well as monitoring the
planned versus actual utilization of resources &
taking corrective action

• Ensures that assigned resources are available

to project at the right time, right place, and right
amount for the project to continue without
delays.
PM BOK 9.6.2

21
CONTROL RESOURCES – ALTERNATIVE ANALYSIS

9.6.2.1 DATA ANALYSIS

9.2.2.5 Alternatives analysis:
• Used to evaluate identified options in order to
select the best options or approaches.
• Many activities have multiple options like using
various levels of resource capability or skills,
different sizes or types of machines, different tools
(manual versus automated), and make-rent-or buy
decisions, paying additional for overtime or
additional team resources can be weighed against
a late delivery or phased deliveries.
• Alternatives analysis assists in providing the best
solution to perform the project activities.
22
CONTROL RESOURCES – ALTERNATIVE ANALYSIS

Problem Statement

In order to select best option for ship’s main engine

based on our requirement, alternative analysis was
conducted keeping in mind the following
parameters:

• Type of Engine, HP, RPM, Fuel , Technical

specification, weight , price , delivery time and
EEF (military equipment sanction) analysis.

8.3.2 CONTROLQUALITY:
• TOOLSAND TECHNIQUES
• 8.3.2.1 DATA GATHERING
• A checklist is a list of items, actions, or
points to be considered. It is often used
as a reminder.
• Checklists help in managing the control
quality activities in a structured manner.
