DIFFRACTION
Diffraction refers to various
phenomena which occurs when a wave
encounters an obstacle or a slit. It is
defined as the bending of light around
the corners of an obstacle or aperture
into the region of geometrical shadow of
the obstacle.

DIFFRACTION
Diffraction was explained
using Huygens’ principle that
a smooth wave front is made
up of many small point-
source wavelets.
iffraction pattern
The cutting of coherent light on two
edges closely together produces a
diffraction pattern, which is pattern on a
screen of constructive and destructive
interference of Huygens’ wavelets.
iffraction pattern
A pair of light or sound waves will
experience interference when they pass
through each other. The individual
waves will add together (superposition)
so that a new wavefront is created.

Single-Slit
Diffraction
When coherent, blue light passes
through a single, small opening that is
larger than wavelength of the light, the
light is diffracted by both edges, and a
series of bright and dark bands
appears on a distant screen.

Diffraction
When
Patternthe single slit
is illuminated, a
central bright band
appears.
APPLICATION
Diffraction can be used to
separate different
wavelengths of light using a
diffraction grating.

APPLICATION
APPLICATION
Diffraction can also be
used to look at molecules
 using
X-ray crystallography.
APPLICATION
X-ray crystallography (XRC) is the
experimental science determining the atomic
and molecular structure of a crystal, in which
the crystalline structure causes a beam of
incident X-rays to diffract into many specific
directions.
