Fishing broken wire
 When the wire breaks we have two leading
scenarios

 Broken on surface and the broken ends

remain on surface

Schlumberger Private
 Wire breaks down hole

 We now have to look closely at the

circumstances before we proceed

 Is the wire fatigued

 What was the operation at failure
 Was the elastic limit passed
 What is the status downhole

 Considerations for PCE changes

 Weight of wire and tools downhole

 Is there a need to change to braided cable
 Grease injection

 Personnel experience

 BOP arrangement
 Multi wirelines in use
 Dual and triple BOP’s

 Lubricator length

Fishing broken wire
 What is the status of the fish down the hole

 How much wire is there

 Did the toolstring fall down after the event

Schlumberger Private
 Are tools free

 In the tubing

 In the casing

Fishing broken wire
 What is the status of the fish down the hole

 If jarring to release a plug

 Shear direction of the pulling tool latched

Schlumberger Private
 Was a shear off attempted

 Is jar action limited, could this be a

problem with the fishing tool

 Never try to fish the wire and retrieve the

device in the same operation

Fishing broken wire
 How much wire is there

 Calculation to find the top of the wire

 Wire size is a factor

Schlumberger Private
 Tubing size

 Multiple tubing in the string

 Condition of wire

 TOW is just an estimate…..

Fishing broken wire
 Did the toolstring fall down after the event

 OD of the toolstring

 Could debris have followed the fish

Schlumberger Private
 Deviation

 Fluid by-pass

 Is the toolstring free….

 If unsure – proceed as if the toolstring is

stuck

Fishing broken wire
 Wire breaks at surface

 In tubing or in the casing

 Are the tools free or stuck

Schlumberger Private
 Assume worst case scenario

 Re connect wire

Fishing broken wire
 Joining the wire

 Nut or link can be used

 Where did the wire break

Schlumberger Private
 Passing the lower sheave

 Passing the counterhead

 Care when pulling – why did the wire

break

Fishing broken wire
 Wire fall back calculation

 Direct relationship
between the tubing size
and the wire OD

Schlumberger Private
 The larger the wire the
less the fallback

 The greater the tubing ID

the more fall back there is

 Wire condition will affect

the wire fallback

Fishing broken wire - CR

Fishing broken wire

 Wire fallback formula

• T = [ D - ( C + d) ] + ((C + d) x f ) + H
1000

Schlumberger Private
• T = estimated top of wire
• f = wire fall factor for wire / tubing size
• D = depth of the toolstring in the well (when the wire broke)
• d = distance from the counter to the zero point
• H = distance the toolstring falls back down the well
• C = depth on counter when wire is back spooled onto unit

Fishing broken wire

 Changes to toolstring

 Change out spang jars

Schlumberger Private
 Why….

 Tubular jars

 Linear jars…..

Schlumberger Private
 Full bore coverage helps
locate wire

 Multiple loops against

tubing can aid location of
wire

 Looped shape can drag

debris down the well

 For multi tubing

Schlumberger Private
 Sleeve left at nipple nogo
after shearing pin

 Fingers expand to tubing

 Potential for the fingers to

leave gaps and the wire
to pass, causes worse
problems
