Aim and Objectives
Aim
• To analyze the working principal of dual clutch transmission system.
Objectives
• To Reduce energy consumption.
• More fuel efficient than conventional automatic.
• To maintain good efficiency in gearbox.
Introduction
• A dual-clutch transmission is one approach to an automatic
transmission featured with dual clutch module and two input shafts.

• One clutch controls the even gears, and the other controls the odd
gears.

• Able to provide a high-quality gear shifting.

Continued
History

• This type of transmission was invented by

Frenchman Adolphe Kégresse just before World War II.

•  The first mass production development of the twin-clutch

or dual-clutch transmission started in the early part of 1980.

• The first series production road car with a dual-clutch

transmission was the 2003 Volkswagen Golf Mk4 R32.
Dual Clutch Transmission System
• In dual-clutch transmission , two clutches are arranged concentrically.
• A dual-clutch transmission eliminates the torque converter as used in
conventional epicyclic-geared automatic transmissions.
Components of Dual Clutch
Transmission System
• Clutch
• The gear box
• Propeller shaft
• Universal joints
• Rear axle
• Wheel
• Tyres
Advantages of Dual Clutch Transmission
System
• Better fuel economy up to 15% improvement than conventional
transmission.
• Loss of torque transmission from the engine to the driving wheels
during gear shifts is reduced
• Very smooth gear-shift operations
• It doesn't have is a clutch pedal.
• Power flow from the engine to the transmission is not interrupted,
fuel efficiency increases dramatically
Disadvantages of Dual Clutch
Transmission System
• Relatively expensive to manufacture and therefore increases vehicle
purchase price.
• Heavier than a conventional manual transmission.
• Expensive transmission fluids/lubricants with additives are required,
which needs changing on a regular basis.
Working Principle

• When the clutch is engaged, hydraulic pressure inside the piston

forces a set of coil spring part which pushes a series of stacked clutch
plates and friction discs against a fixed pressure plate.
• The friction discs have internal teeth that are sized and shaped to
mesh with spines on the clutch drum.
• In turn, the drum is connected to the gear set that will receive the
transfer code.
• To disengage the clutch, fluid pressure inside the piston is reduced.
This allow the piston spring to relax, which eases pressure on the
clutch pack and pressure plate.
