The Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary (CICM) was founded in 1862 by a Belgian
diocesan priest, Fr. Theophile Verbist, for the
evangelization of China.

He and his companions were entrusted with the

Northern part of China (Inner Mongolia).

In 1946 the Congregation bought a manor in

Arlington, Va., which they called “Missionhurst” to
serve as a base for the financial support of the China
Mission and other growing missions around the world.
Missionhurst would be the central house for the CICM
Province in the United States.

Intro.
Discussion.

Missionhurst – CICM’s origins lie in Scheut,

Anderlecht, a suburb of Brussels; that is why we
are mostly known as the Scheut Missionaries.
Presently, our international name "CICM
Missionaries" is preferred, although, in the United
States of America, the Congregation is mostly
known as Missionhurst.

In 1947, they decided to expand their CICM

presence in the United States.
Today, about 40
Missionhurst - CICM
missionaries live and work in
the United States.

During the first 40 years

most came from Belgium and
CICM Holland.

During the last 25 years

most newcomers have come
from the Democratic Republic
of Congo, the Philippines, and
Indonesia.

PASTORAL Catechetical Formation Celebration of the Sacraments

WORK

Building of churches Formation of the small

and chapels Christian communities
Brazil

- began in 1963 in Nova Iguacu in the parishes of Santa Maria and du Bom Pastor.
- founded a center called C.E.P.A.C. (Centro de Pastoral Catequética), which soon became influential and
spread throughout the country.

The mission enjoyed a major expansion and the missionaries took into account the socio-political,
economic and cultural contexts in which they were called to announce the good news. They were very quickly
integrated as members of a local Church called to deal with a hostile reality of poverty, murders, military
abductions, tortures, etc. The mission grew by engaging the people and accompanying them in their quest for
liberation, justice and peace. The evangelization has allowed them to discover more deeply the social and
political dimension of faith forming the consciences of the people in the Latin American context.
Guatemela

- first CICM missionaries arrived in Guatemala on April 13, 1955 and settled in the parishes of Palin,
Tiquisate, Puerto San José and La Democracia (Department of Escuintla).
- 1956, the Congregation accepted pastoral responsibility for the total Department of Escuintla. One of its
objectives was to provide young people and adults, with the possibility of learning more about their faith and
of raising their awareness of social issues. Another goal was to be a place of dialogue and collaboration for
ecclesial renewal.

The presence in the Capital City was extended to marginal areas, inhabited mostly by indigenous people
who fled the internal armed conflict. This effort had its most painful moment with the murder of Father Alfonso
Stessel (Belgian), in Tierra Nueva 1 (Chinautla), a crime committed on 19 December 1994, attributed to youth
gangs.
Haiti

- mission began in October, 1953 in the diocese of Cap-Haitien

The mission knew a great expansion and a rich pastoral activity that took the development of the person
in mind in the duvalierist context. In an attempt to accompany the villagers and to improve the plight of the
poor, Emmaus Center of Papaye was founded in 1970, as a permanent catechetical Center that was aiming at
not only the Christians’ formation, but also the leaders’ formation, the literacy, etc.

Mission priorities: Kiwo whereby the Congregation wants to respond to the training and the
accompaniment of young people; the magazine Bon Nouvel, that it is a response to the need for literacy and
information in the language of the people; and work for justice and peace, providing a pastoral orientation to
the thirst for justice the Haitian people.
Mexico

- CICM presence in Mexico started in 1979 when in the Colonia La Pastora a formation house was opened
where the young confreres who were destined to work in Latin America or the Caribbean would do their
theological studies.

Three missionary priorities:

• the work in the periphery of the big city;
• the presence in the world of the indigenous náhuatl people; and
• the prison ministry.
Dominican
Republic
- CICM mission began in January 1958 in the parish of Tamayo.
- Years later the “Haitian Ministry” was created and entrusted to one or two CICM members, working full
time in this ministry. The aim of this Ministry is to accompany Haitians who live in bateyes in their struggle for
survival and towards their integration into Dominican society.

Mission priorities:
• Missionary presence in marginalized areas that seeks to encourage and create awareness in the ecclesial
communities;
• Train leaders; and
• Missionary animation which seeks to stimulate the local church to the universal dimension of the
mission ad intra and ad extra and Haitian Pastoral Ministry which seeks to create a spirit of fraternity
among Haitians and Dominicans.
Conclusion
Inspired by our founder’s devotion, Missionhurst-
CICM missionaries have now proclaimed the good news
of the gospel in some of the most remote places on earth.
Today, almost a thousand priests and brothers from the
United States, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia
continue serving and caring for God’s poorest and most
neglected people around the world.
“CICM has provided me with the
training to train others and provide my
staff with a career ladder and
opportunities to enhance their life both
professional and personal.”
