What is GIS ?? ?
 GIS stands for “GAS INSULATED SWITCH GEAR”

 A metal enclosed switch gear in which the insulation is

obtained by an insulating gas (SF6 or SF6 mixtures) other
than air at atmospheric pressure

 In line with basic design of sub-station

 Modular in construction

 All components are contained in earthed enclosures filled

with sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF₆)
GIS Introduction
 In 1960 first GIS at 110KV introduced in Germany

 Today GIS technology is successfully operational up to

800 kV

 GIS is an attractive alternative to conventional (AIS)

because of the increased availability, reliability and the
reduced life cycle costs
Codes and Standards
 IEC 62271- 203
 Gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear
for rated voltages above 52 kV
Advantages
 GIS is highly reliable

 Low maintenance and long life

 Provides high degree of safety to operating personnel

 Can be assembled on site very quickly

 Compact low weight and flexible

 Saves space as well as reduces civil work

 More suitable for unstable ground or in seismically active areas

Advantages
 Protected from environmental conditions

 Easily extendable with limited space

 Factory tested and pre-assembled

 Available from 72.KV to 800KV

 Fault level up to 63kA and even 80kA with special design

 Fastest delivery
Disadvantages
 Initial cost is higher compared to AIS

 Service back up in India is under establishment

 Spares have to come from out side India (i.e. from

OEM)
