Mass, Force, and Torque Measurement
• Mass (Weight) Measurement
• Force Measurement
• Accelerometers
• Vibrating wire sensors
• Torque Measurement
• Reaction forces in shaft bearings
• Prony brakes
• Measurement of Induced Strains
• Optical Torque Measurement

Mass (Weight) Measurement
• Electronic Load Cell
• Pneumatic/Hydraulic Load Cell
• Intelligent Load Cell
• Mass-balance Instrument
• Spring balance
Electronic Load Cell
• Mass (Weight) is measured by
measuring extension or
compression due to applied force
• Two types of load cells
• Compression type
• Extension type
• Translation measuring devices are
used
• Strain Gauges
• Linear Displacement
Transducers (LVDTs)
• Piezoelectric cystals

4
5
Pneumatic/Hydraulic load cells
• Converts mass measurement into pressure measurement
• Air flows at 0.25 m3/hr at 4 bar pressure
6
Pneumatic/Hydraulic load cells
• Gravitational force due to the unknown mass is applied, via
a diaphragm, to oil contained within an enclosed chamber.
The corresponding increase in oil pressure is measured by a
suitable pressure transducer.
7
Mass-balance (weighing) instruments
Mass-balance instruments are based on comparing the
gravitational force on the measured mass with the
gravitational force on another body of known mass.

• Beam balance (equal-arm balance)

• Weigh beam
• Pendulum scale
• Electromagnetic balance

Pendulum Scale

Electromagnetic balance

Spring balance
• Mass is hung on the end of spring
• And the deflection of the spring is measured
• Against a scale
